Dear Henry Families,
Welcome to the 2023-2024 academic school year! It is our goal to provide a safe and comfortable learning environment for all our students here at Henry. We recognize that it is equally important for our students to be exposed to proper social skills and behaviors as well as strong academic skills in order to be successful in school.
Our team has identified common expectations for all our students. We are committed to teaching these Henry expectations with a concentrated effort during the month of August. Remember these words: Henry Gila Monsters are safe, responsible, respectful, and kind. These are the expectations that we will hold all students to throughout the year in the classroom, cafeteria, hallways, playground, and in all areas of our campus. We are confident in our students, and we know they are capable of consistently showing us these skills.
All classroom teachers and specialist teachers use our Henry PBIS Expectations matrix when teaching what it looks like to be safe, respectful, responsible, and kind. As a reminder, PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Support. Students have been discussing this daily since the first day of school, and they already know what is expected of them. Please ask your child to share this with you. One of the benefits of this is that the expectations will be consistent across each grade level and across the school. The goal of this is to recognize what it takes to be safe, responsible, respectful, and kind. Another goal is to give all students the opportunity to change their behaviors so they can be. All adults at Henry believe in recognizing students when they are modeling the appropriate school expectations. At Henry, we use PBIS tickets to reinforce students’ choices and tell them how well they are doing. Weekly PBIS drawings take place on Friday mornings and at All Stars Assemblies to celebrate student success.
At the elementary level, we know that students make mistakes or forget the rules once in a while. That is why we came up with specific steps and opportunities to allow students to change their behaviors. There will be plenty of reteaching opportunities provided this month for students to learn and demonstrate their understanding of school-wide expectations. We also know that there will be times when a student continues to make choices to not uphold these expectations and our TUSD Code of Conduct, even after they have been given opportunities to change their behavior. In these cases, classroom teachers will go through their classroom management plan. If further support is needed, a referral to the principal will take place where the TUSD Code of Conduct will be applied. It is our desire to keep all students learning and not allow behaviors to interrupt the learning of others. With all these proactive steps in place, we are looking forward to having a successful school year! Beginning in September, Henry students will start using our Character Strong curriculum with the month of September’s focus on Respect.
Additionally, we would like to thank all families for your help in our drop-off and dismissal procedures in our two-student drive-throughs. We ask that all vehicles pull all the way up before unloading and loading vehicles. This prevents backups and makes the process more efficient. Families needing additional time in the morning are encouraged to use a parking spot if you need to enter campus. I am asking all drivers to be vigilant for anyone traveling on foot in the crosswalk areas. This includes all traffic on Igo Way where we have a School Zone of 15 mph. Please do not use the Red Curb Zone in front of the recycling dumpster for parking. This is problematic when the recycling and trash contractors are needing to access this area.
Respectfully,
Thomas Heminger, Principal
