MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
MARCH 2017
From Middle School Principal Mr. Murillo
PARCC Testing is approaching fast and our teachers have prepared our students to do their very best this year. Parents- I am asking you to help your student have the best testing week by following the recommendations below.
· Read a combination of fiction and non-fiction with your child. Look for subjects of interest.
· Discuss and “do” real life math with your child. Help him/her know basic math facts.
· Discuss the new tests with your child. Make sure he/she is not scared or anxious going into the new tests.
· Explain to your child that the tests will initially be more challenging. Tell your child to do his/her best on the test and that you are there to help every step of the way.
· After the test, review the results with your child. Bring the teacher into the discussion as needed.
· Provide a quiet, comfortable place for studying at home and make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast before a test.
· Above all, be positive and encouraging about the tests.
DEAR PARENTS OF 8TH GRADE STUDENTS
As your student gets ready to complete the 8th grade and enter high school, we realize that you may have questions about how to best help him/her complete high school and prepare for life after graduation. We would like to invite you to attend a combination information and working session as we help 8th grade students sign up for classes they would like to have next year as 9th grade students and hear about the opportunities they will have. It is our hope that some of our staff members will attend so you may meet them and ask questions you may have about our classes and help your child to make the best choices about their future as high school students. This meeting is scheduled for Thursday, March 30, 2017 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM in the Cafeteria
If you will not be able to attend, other sessions with the counselor will need to be arranged before April 14, 2017, in order to give your student the best opportunity to have the classes they want on their schedule for the 2017-2018 school year.
You must attend one of these sessions or arrange to meet with me individually before your child will be given a schedule for the 2017-2018 school year. If you have any questions, you may reach me at 754-2232.
Sincerely,
Adele Alfson

March is National Nutrition Month!
Congratulations to Skogland Middle School and Center High School for each winning the Gold Award for Healthy School Champions! In order to keep the health of our students good, it is important to educate them on proper nutrition. As parents, you can do a lot to help your children learn health eating habits and maintain a healthy weight. Involving them in meal preparation and cooking is a great way to motivate them to try new foods and is a good way to spend time together as a family.
What is a “healthy” diet?
· It emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat or fat-free milk products.
· It includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts.
· It is low is saturated fats, trans-fats, cholesterol, sodium, and added sugars.
· It stays within your daily calorie needs.
Focus in Healthy Food Choices: Choose the GO, SLOW, and WHOA foods:
- GO foods are the lowest in fats and added sugar. They are nutrient dense with a better source of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients important to health.
- Examples: fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low fat dairy products, lean meats, poultry and fish, bean, and egg whites/egg substitutes.
- Eat these foods the most.
SLOW foods are higher in fats, added sugar and calories.
- Examples: veggies with added fat, white flour, low-fat mayo, 2% milk products, peanut butter, pizza, baked chips, and mac and cheese.
- Eat these foods SOMETIMES.
WHOA foods are highest in fats and sugars. They are calorie dense food and low in vitamins and minerals and other things that your body needs.
- Examples: Whole-milk products, fried foods, baked goods, candy, soda, chips, creamy salad dressings and sugary cereals.
- Eat these food once in a while in small potions.
