Integrated Science Standards: Then, Now, and FUTURE
Other highlights from this breakout session included learning about the business and industry partners that were involved in this revision process, with a focus of the revision revolving around what specific skills are needed for future employees in science fields.
Also, the main shifts in instruction that will result after final adoption of the revised standards include:
- More practical, hands on experiences for students
- A three dimensional approach to teaching and learning
- And how to aid students in applying decision making and problem solving skills
Many resources and systems are in place or are in the works to be in place very soon to assist teachers in school leaders in learning the new standards and how to implement them, including:
- A crosswalk of the "old" Science and Technology and Environment and Ecology standards with the new standards so teachers and school leaders can see the shifts and gaps in skills
- A PennSEL Network of Science Teachers in the region who are taking the lead in being the core group in learning about environmental science in our region, what exactly three dimensional learning is and what is looks like, what the performance expectations in the standards are and include, plus more
- PDE partnering with our iU to help us learn what knowledge about instruction is needed for the upcoming shifts in standards, what resources are available for our schools, and what instructional programming can help
KEY TAKEAWAY: "The current standards were adopted in 2002. There have been many, many changes in our world since 2002. The biggest shift in the new standards will not be in content but in the way that teaching and learning take place."
Creating an Assessment Map at the LEA and District Level
This session also included two examples of assessment maps, one for an entire district, and one example for one school building. To see the powerpoint presentation of the session, click here.
Many of the points taken from this session will appear in ARIN's new data series, "Know Your Data (and what to do with it)".
