A Letter from Tim: Welcome!
Dear Families,
Welcome to our year at school! After a busy week of preparations, we have been so excited to welcome children back into our classrooms. There’s really nothing quite like the energy of the opening days of school, with a year full of growth, potential, and promise ahead of us.
At the start of any new undertaking- whether it be a new curricular focus or a campus improvement - we ask ourselves the simple question, “why?” Will this idea improve student learning or the student experience at Stanley?
I came across an article last weekend by Frank Bruni in the NY Times about the “why” of higher education called, “How to Get the Most Out of College,” and it made me think about some of our staff and parents from the Class of 2014 who are sending kids to college this week. I don’t suggest you need to be thinking about that, especially those just beginning the kindergarten adventure, though what Bruni says about college resonated with me as I think about Stanley’s purpose.
He cautions against thinking about college as simply vocational, preparing one for a professional life. He advises to use the time to invest in relationships, with peers and with faculty in particular. Bruni talks about those who get the most out of college tend to be students who “move into a peer relationship with the institution rather than a consumer relationship with it.” They make strong connections, they seek out leadership opportunities, they get involved. The most successful students seek those whose demographic background is different from their own. “Diversity opens you to an array and wealth of ideas, and being comfortable with it is an asset in just about any workplace or career.” They realize that above all else they’re in college to “widen the circle of human beings who know you and care about you.”
That’s a wonderful thought, and it fits our purpose at Stanley well. After all the rich programs, curricular projects, trips, productions and everything else our children experience at Stanley, it’s the quality of the people and the quality of relationships that makes the difference. It’s an honor to work alongside such a dedicated and talented group of teachers. We look forward to the year ahead with you and your children.
All the best,
Tim
