🧪 MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE FAIR! 🔬
Dear WMS Parents and Guardians,
We hope your child has been enjoying science this school year. It’s hard to believe the 2023/2024 school year will be drawing to a close, and there is still so much to accomplish. The field of science offers so many ways for students to learn and showcase their knowledge; one way we go about personalizing your child’s education is by having all students participate in the annual science fair.
Science fairs are meant to enhance the student’s interest in science by providing an opportunity for independent practice in the various fields of science. In addition, we hope students may discover a passion or talent that they can continue to build upon throughout their lives.
Students at all grade levels (6-8) are required to participate in our annual science fair. In the past, some families may have found this to be a stressful time of year as parents hope their child makes adequate progress toward completion of the project. Rest assured, we want your child to be successful too! With that in mind, please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns you might have.
Based on past questions asked by parents, we have come up with the following FAQ list.
Can my child work alone, or does she/he need to work with a partner?
Your child may work alone but is welcome to choose a partner (max. group size is 2 students). If she/he chooses a partner, they will most likely need to get together outside of school hours to work on the “experiment” portion of the project. Plan for that if necessary.
Will the Science Fair cost a lot of money?
No. Parents do not need to spend any money on science fair unless they choose to! There are many projects to be found online, in our library books and other resources, or from your child’s imagination that is completely free. Many projects only require the use of regular household items. We always encourage students to keep costs in mind and check with their parents before committing to any projects that require purchasing items.
Am I going to have to spend hours helping my child with their project and putting together the display board?
No. We provide ample class time for this and want students to complete it here at school. While we are sure you will be curious and excited about your child’s progress, please allow your student to gain experience in carrying out an experiment either on their own or with their partner and putting together the display board on their own. This experience will help them grow as a student. Of course, where safety may be a concern, and you feel that an adult presence is necessary, please support your child as you see fit!
Do I have to buy the display board? If so, what color and size?
No. Display boards are provided by the school! We have a variety of colors as well as white and black boards. If your child wants to purchase her/his own board, that is up to you; you are welcome to do so. If you choose to, the required size is 36”x48”. A headboard will be needed for the title.
Is time provided at school for the written portions of the science fair project?
Yes. Your child will receive plenty of time in class to complete the write-ups. Students should have no problem completing the written portions of the project at school as long as they use their time wisely. Due dates and checkpoints are set for each section. Again, as long as the student stays on task during in-class work days, they should not have to work on it at home unless they choose to do so on their own.
Where and when will my child complete his/her experiment?
The experiment is the only portion that your child should be working on outside of class and will most likely be completed at home. However, if that is a concern, there are lots of projects that can be done here at school using our equipment. Your child just has to let us know, and we will support them in our classrooms during recess or focus time.
How can I keep track of what my child should be working on?
Guidelines and resource documents will be shared electronically with your child in Google Classroom. Have your child go into their science “Google Classroom” to show you handouts such as the partnership agreement form, display board layout, potential costs, links to online resources, and a schedule for due dates. (Handouts may vary from 6th - 8th grade!)
When is the Science Fair/ MS Showcase Night?
Science Fair projects will be on display in the middle school gymnasium during the following dates and times. Students will not be by their projects during these times and are not required to attend the event: Wednesday, May 15, 2024: 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Please join us to view the science fair projects and gain an appreciation for all of the hard work our middle schoolers put into their project.
Thank you for your support.
