Monday Morning Update
Options Program - October 7, 2019
COMPASS & OPTIONS SCHOOL NEWS
ASSESSMENTS ~ Our learning coaches are encouraged to watch The Importance of Testing workshop, which provides an overview of testing at Compass including diagnostic assessments, state testing, English-fluency testing, and physical fitness testing. Please contact Assessment Coordinator, Beth Sneyd, at bsneyd@compasscharters.org if you have any questions.
AVID: READING TO LEARN ~ Now is a good time to review fundamental academic practices. This month, we will focus on reading to learn strategies that scholars and learning coaches can use. One such strategy is Marking the Text, where scholars are actively engaged in their reading assignments by numbering paragraphs, underlining key points, and circling unknown terms. Their reading efforts are enhanced, which improves retention, and often makes studying or completing an assignment easier.
ENERGY BUS TIP OF THE WEEK ~ Repeat to yourself, “I can, I will, I am.” This simple statement can be that extra push you need this week!
FREE MUSEUM DAYS IN SAN DIEGO ~ Throughout October, scholars living in San Diego can enjoy free admission to over 40 art, cultural, and science museums and historical sites in San Diego County when they download and present the Kids Free in October coupon.
GIVE BACK ~ The Annual Fund is Compass Charter Schools’ first giving priority and the fundraiser in which we invite every family to participate. Dollars raised through the Annual Fund benefit every scholar and provide critical operating funds to help bridge the gap between what the state provides and what it really costs to deliver the outstanding education we want for our children. We invite our community to support Compass through our Annual Fund!
OCLC: TAKE A TOUR ~ Our Orange County Learning Center (OCLC) in Santa Ana has a tour scheduled this Thursday, October 10 from 9:30-10:30am. The tour is open to learning coaches who would like to visit our learning center and learn more about the learning experience we provide for scholars. Please contact Linda Larson at LLason@compasscharters.org to register and for more information.
OPTIONS HANDBOOK HIGHLIGHT ~ Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) - A committee of educators from within the region who evaluate and approve schools for accreditation based on the organization's criterion. One of their purposes is to ensure educational best practices. University of California schools has a policy that requires all schools to be accredited in order to establish and maintain an “A-G” course list. Also - Did you know our Yolo charter is going through WASC accreditation this year? This is a process that involves all stakeholders!
WRITER’S WORKSHOP FOR SCHOLARS ~ Mrs. Chalco-Paz held the first in a series of Writer’s Workshop sessions this past week focusing on Personal Narrative Writing. Scholars from both the Online and Options program participated in the live class and will spend the next few days working on assignments in the Google Classroom. If you would like to access the content of the live sessions the recordings are available here:
We would love for our scholars (and their learning coaches) to attend the next session and be a part of our workshop! Our 3-5-grade scholars will meet again next Monday, October 14 at 11:00am and our 6-8-grade scholars will meet next Wednesday, October 16 at 11:00am. We look forward to seeing you there!
