SOLVING THE POST OFFICE MYSTERY
The story has floated around in Florence for years that the grand Post Office/Federal Courthouse on Seminary Street in downtown Florence was intended for Florence, South Carolina, but, through a mysterious foul-up, it was built in Florence, Alabama, instead. The story is patently untrue. Around 1907, a group of local attorneys, Emmet O'Neal among them, grew very tired of having to go to the Federal Courthouse in Birmingham whenever they were involved in a Federally-related case. So, they literally made more than one trip to Washington to lobby for the construction of a Federal Courthouse in Florence. Ultimately, they were successful; the doors of the elegant Courthouse, with the added benefit of a Post Office on the first floor, opened in 1913. Architectural drawings for this fine building are still in existence; they have "Florence, Alabama" in large letters on each page.
