By Walter Dean Myers
Does Richie Have The Courage?
Fallen Angels is a special edition novel about a young boy becoming a man, taking on the responsibility of supplying for his family by enlisting in the army. When Richie first enlist in the army he just does it for extra money and different benefits that come with it, but he had another thing coming! Surviving the war would take courage, power, willingness, and the honor and pride of doing it for a greater cause. Will Richie be able to step up to the challenge or will all the overwhelming killing, suicide, and harsh starvation and conditions get to him? His brother, troop members and mother believe in him the question is does Richie believe in himself?
The Dream
Before enlisting in the army Richie planned on playing basketball until he hurt himself and had no other solution but to join the army.
Suicidal
While in the army Richie experienced something that I believe no human should go through! He was a witness to a suicide bomber! Although there are suicide bombers that are mainly adults in his instance it was a baby. Which was a very tragic thing he had to endure.
Couragous
It takes courage to be in the army and obviously Richie had the courage to do it.
A Man Can Be Changed....
" I knew Mama loved me, but I also knew when I got back, she would expect me to be the same person, but it could never happen. She hadn’t been to Nam. She hadn’t given her poncho to anybody to wrap a body in, or stepped over a dying kid."
