Phalen Virtual Leadership Academy
"Bytes" From Your School Leader, Dr. Townsend
March 29, 2024
Greetings Phalen Virtual Leadership Academy Families,
Happy Friday! Happy Women History Month! I hope you are thoroughly enjoying your Spring Break. You are missed and we cannot wait to see everyone on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.
For those who choose to celebrate, we wish you a Happy Easter and a Happy Easter Monday!
Please be sure to check your email and ensure you have completed the intent to return form for your scholar(s) to ensure we have a seat next school year for everyone currently enrolled.
Although we are on Spring Break, we highly recommend and encourage all scholars to read a good book, get outdoors and enjoy nature, call or stop by to check on your elders or family members, and if you have a high school scholar working in Courseware, this is a great opportunity to work ahead or get caught up to ensure an on-time high school graduation.
We look forward to seeing your scholar(s) on TUESDAY, APRIL 2, 2024 at 8:35 a.m. in class for Week 35 at PLA Virtual!
With Gratitude,
Dr. Townsend, Principal
Happy Spring Break 2024!
This week, We recognize the work of Maya Angelou
“You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. Please remember that your difficulties do not define you. They simply strengthen your ability to overcome.”
Activist and poet Maya Angelou worked alongside civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X to assure equality for all.
Her famous works of literature revolved around the themes of racism and identity. Ms. Angelou was recognized “as a spokesperson for all people who are committed to raising the moral standards of living in the United States.”

Some Post-Pandemic Attendance Facts
The COVID-19 Pandemic seems to be the gift that no one wants, but the gift that keeps on giving. This is no different when it comes to K-12 attendance. It's going to take aggressive interventions to repair the pandemic's destructive impact on kids' schooling. There's still a lot of work to do on both student achievement and absenteeism.
Here are some facts:
K-12 students learned a lot last year, but they’re still missing too much school. From 2022-2023, chronic absenteeism declined in 33 of the 39 states. However, it was still a persistent problem: In a handful of places, roughly 1 in 3 students – or more – were chronically absent.
Poverty matters (as always) !! No one wants poor children to pay the highest price for the pandemic, but that is the path that most states are on.
The pandemic really exacerbated inequality between students in high-poverty and low-poverty districts and students of different racial and ethnic backgrounds
