EXCITING NEWS!
Dear Families:
We have some very exciting news to share with the DeKeyser community. As you were aware, an urgent need being addressed by the 2023 UCS Safety and Success bond issue is to provide walls and doors to classrooms at several “open concept” schools, including DeKeyser Elementary. We are pleased to share with you that our district is moving forward with a plan to address this critical need during the first phase of the bond issue projects.
As you are aware, DeKeyser currently does not have walls or doors for our classrooms through a large part of our building. While it was an innovative design when our school was built 50 years ago, the concept created significant safety concerns for our community. Our need is great and will in essence result in a complete reconstruction of our school.
As part of this process, the reconstruction will make DeKeyser Elementary the first UCS building to introduce a design that our district envisions for all elementary schools. This design will provide a safe environment for our students, reflects best practices in facility use, gives our staff tools they can use to empower our students, and creates a building that will foster school pride and will serve our community for the next generations.
The work is extensive and will occur over the next school year. To give workers the space and time to reconstruct our school, our students and staff will need to be relocated to Rose Kidd Elementary, which is just south of 17 Mile Road (east of Dodge Park) and is within our attendance area. We will remain at Rose Kidd until the work is completed at DeKeyser Elementary in Fall, 2025. Rose Kidd is now being improved with renovated space, a new bus loop and playground improvements for it to be ready to welcome us for the start of the 2024-25 school year. Over the next few months, our staff will be working in partnership with you to make this a positive transition for our students.
We will be sharing designs of our reconstructed facility shortly (they are already displayed in our lobby!) so you can see the positive future that awaits our community. We will also be sharing additional details on the transition to and from DeKeyser Elementary at Rose Kidd.
These are exciting times for DeKeyser Elementary!
Sincerely,
Shannon Hathcock
