C & I Update
Commitment to Excellence 12/2/16
#EducationMatters
On November 18th, fourteen Freshman in the CHS biology class enjoyed a steep 1000 foot vertical climb through the 2000 Storrie Fire and 2012 Chips Fire footprint to learn about local fire history and fire adapted forests. This field trip is part of the Fire Restoration Partnership with the Plumas National Forest. Each year all PUSD students from 4th-12th grade take at least one field trip to a designated fire area to participate in recreational, educational, and restoration activities. It was a great day with great kids on our great public lands!

Student Voice and Choice: Genius Hour
As we move towards student ownership of learning, we talk about student voice and student choice. One way to do this is through Genius Hour. This is already happening in our schools, most noticeably through the Senior Project, but is applicable TK/K-12.
What is Genius Hour?
Genius hour is a movement that allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom. It provides students a choice in what they learn during a set period of time during school. It’s not easy to determine where the idea was originally created, but there are at least two events that have impacted genius hour. The first is at Google where employees dedicated 20% if their time to work on a project of their choosing. The second is from the book Drive, by Daniel Pink who focuses on motivation with three areas: autonomy, mastery and purpose.
How can you make genius hour happen in your classroom?
Step one is carving out the time. It can range from once a week, once a month, once a quarter, once a trimester, where teachers provide the parameters, but students are allowed to focus on a topic of their choosing.
