IPS Exam Study Guide
Lab Safety
For Every Lab
- Goggles kept on face until Mr. Leeds says to put them away.
- Report all accidents/spills to Mr. Leeds immediately.
- Always use common sense.
In Case of Emergency
- Nurse: ext: 2828
Safety Equipment in Classroom
- Fire extinguisher
- Fire blanket
- Eye wash/shower
Chemicals
- Never taste
- Always waft liquids
- Avoid touching
- Always wash hands with soap and water after lab.
- *Flush skin with water if contact with chemicals occurs* AND notify Mr. Leeds
Glass
- Hot and cold look the same
- Never use chipped or broken
- Never use force to remove or insert
Alcohol Burners
- Roll sleeves, put up long hair (not just pull back or you cannot do the lab)
- Never walk away from a lit burner
- Never point the open end of a hot test tube at yourself or someone else.
- Do not look down into a test tube/beaker when heated
Diluting Acid
- Acid must be added to water
- Never add water to acid
- could cause an exothermic reaction
- water is less dense (lighter) than acid so it will sit on top of acid and could splash out
End of Experiment
- Cap burner and make sure flame is out.
- Clean-up area and materials completely! (or you lose points)
Scientific Method
- Identify problem
- Gather information
- Form hypothesis
- Perform experiment
- Analyze data
- Conclusion
Lab: Reaction in a Bag
Reaction: Three Main Observations
- Turns yellow
- Cold and hot on different corners of bag (liquid a: hot, liquid b: cold)
- Bag fills up with gas (expanding)
Lab: Heating Baking Soda
Lab 1.1 Heating Baking Soda
blue-dot questions
1. There are liquid droplets and a gas is being pushed out.
2. A gas collects in the inverted bottle.
3. The gas comes from the air in the tube being pushed out while the b-soda was heated.
4. The droplets on the test tube came from the gas pushing the water into the test tube.
5. The colors in the test tubes aren't the same. The color of the heated one is darker. The other is a milky color.
6. The white powder in the heated test tube CANNOT be baking soda. It would have had the same reaction as the other test tube.
extra question
There is less condensation than the amount of solid in the test tube because you cannot have more than what you started with.
experimental errors
-hole in rubber tubing
-tubing not in the top of bottle
-stopper not on tightly
-cap burner before rubber tubing
