Newsletter Term 4 Week 2
St Patrick's School Masterton 26th October 2021
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou,
On Sunday, Pope Francis invited parishes around the world to join in the life-changing, life-giving and life-saving efforts of his missions. Priests, religious Sisters and Brothers offer education in desolate areas, share the Gospel in some of the most remote areas of the world, provide crucial medical care to those who could otherwise not afford it and so much more.
Pope Francis has chosen as the theme for this year's celebration: “We cannot but speak about what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20). In his message to all Catholics about this year’s World Mission Sunday, said, “To be on mission is to be willing to think as Christ does, to believe with Him that those around us are also my brothers and sisters.” To find out in more detail about the missions and to see how you can help go to: https://worldmissionmonth.org/ .
This year’s theme reflects the overarching 2021 Pacific Language Week theme of Wellbeing, by linking the importance of language to overall well being and is a powerful reminder about the importance of preserving Pacific languages and cultures. Further information about this week can be found at https://www.mpp.govt.nz/programmes/pacific-language-weeks/tokelau-language-week-2021/ .
On Thursday we will be taking part in New Zealand’s national ‘Shakeout Day’. This is a great opportunity for our students to practice what they would do if an earthquake was to happen whilst at school. The children will learn that:
There is no alarm to indicate that an earthquake is about to happen.
They are to drop to the floor, take cover under a desk or chair and hold onto the legs until the shaking has stopped.
To keep away from windows and shelves
To stay inside until the shaking stops and it is safe to go outside
Finally, all meet on the netball courts to check everyone is safe and present
By now, all families through the school app, will have received some updates/ blogs on what has been happening for children here at school over the last week. This is part of our process in moving to regular real-time reporting instead of the more traditional mid and end-of-year written reports. This process will involve two parts:
Blogging - which is the sharing of learning experiences that happen at school e.g: photos or video clips of events such as powhiri or other class activities
Reporting - which is the sharing of evidence of your child’s learning progress and achievement
During Term 4 we are focusing on the ‘Blogging’ section so each week please expect to receive updates by your child’s teachers. Then from 2022, we are also going to start reporting on your child’s learning on a regular basis each term.

Gospel of the Week:
Mark 10:46-52
Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight
46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”
48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”
49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”
So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.
51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.
The blind man said, “Rabbi, I want to see.”
52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus along the road.

2021 School Show DVD Orders
We are excitedly working through the Zones lessons. Lesson 4 is about ‘Zones in me’ where the students anticipate what zones they might be in in different scenarios. This is so the students experience all the zones and learn to manage the expected behaviours in each zone. For example- If you found out that you have won lotto, you might be in the yellow or red zone with excitement.
Lesson 5 is learning to understand different perspectives. This is a longer lesson as the students begin to understand that we are all different and react to the same situation in different ways. For example- a door slamming where I might react with a fright but someone else might laugh. Students are encouraged to notice the social expectations from others are similar to the social expectations others hold for them. The journey to improve our own self regulation includes what we expect from others.
In last week’s newsletter we explained about the company called ‘SchoolDocs’ that we have been working with to create a website for our policies and procedures. As part of this process, throughout each year, as we review our policies we will ask for feedback from our staff, board and parent communities.
