Comp-Sci Weekly
October 23, 2023- October 27, 2023
Principals Message
Hello CompSci Families,
It was a spooky week here at school--just kidding, it was just middle school. Seriously, we had a great week. The kids were busy and well behaved, which is exactly what we want. In 7th grade we had a Mindset celebration on 7A, and a huge math collaboration. In 8th grade I saw some students in History playing a review game and they were very enthusiastic! Our 6th graders are still very excitable and working hard.
This week you received a permission slip for our whole school trip to the Hartford Wolfpack. The slips need to be returned by October 31st--no exceptions. The cost is $5.00 per student, and the money needs to be in by 11/14. It's a fun trip we have done in the past so Please get those slips in.
Speaking of Halloween, we do not allow costumes at school. Instead, we encourage staff and students to wear orange and black, if they so desire. We are not allowing masks or face painting. This is to make all members of our school community comfortable. Thank you for your cooperation!
Finally, the election for Parent Senate is over. Our two senators are Yolanda Centeno and Shelby Henderson-Griffiths. I will begin to add information from their work in the newsletter shortly.
Enjoy the weekend,
Jill Wnuk

Equity Corner: Episode 4
Greetings Comp Sci Families!
This week the Student Equity Committee worked together to plan video and podcast interviews and resources to help our school students address issues that come up in adolescence. The purpose of these resources is to help students to know that they are not alone, and to provide tools to aid all be active in shutting down negative comments in ways that work for them to create a further positive school climate!
We look forward to continuing this work together!

Theme Coach Update
Our Computer Science and Technology classes are grounded in International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards. Computational Thinker is the next standard, focusing on the students’ ability to use technology to solve problems and think algorithmically or through a step by step process.
Computational thinking happens throughout CompSci’s curriculum. Students are taught how to break down complex problems into smaller more manageable steps. For example, when finding the greatest common factor of 2 numbers, students can create a step by step algorithm to solve the mathematical problem. When coding simple games or stories , students need to think logically to make characters move or react to inputs. In analyzing data students need to make graphs , identify patterns or sequences and draw conclusions. Participating in design thinking challenges require students to think about user needs and design solutions ; for example create a digital solution for a real world problem. CompSci students are engaged in a variety of computational thinking activities to develop strong problem solving and critical thinking skills for our ever evolving digital world.

CREC’s Statement of Diversity and Inclusion
“Capitol Region Education Council (CREC) is an intentionally diverse social justice organization whose members work to acknowledge, respect, and empathize with people of all different identifiers, such as race, socioeconomic status, gender identity and expression, education, age, ability, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, language, nationality, and religion. In accordance with CREC’s mission of equity, excellence, and success for all through high-quality educational services, our staff and students commit to participate in and support ongoing equity and inclusion programming through curricular and co-curricular offerings, professional learning, and local and national partnerships. Moreover, CREC staff and students strive to understand and confront the symptoms and causes of systematic oppression—ranging from implicit biases to micro aggressions to discriminatory policies, practices and traditions—that benefit privileged groups. While at CREC, staff and students commit to affirm and honor the lived experiences of others, to willingly challenge inherited beliefs and ideologies, and consequently learn, grow, and serve.”
