Reptiles and Amphibians

Amphibians
Amphibians live part of their lives own land and in the water. Amphibians go through metamorphoses, which means when they are young they hatch from an egg, but do not look like their parents . As they develop their body shape changes. Most of them have soft moist skin, that is protected by a slippery layer of mucus. They also tend to live in moist areas or near water, so they will not dry out. There are three main groups of amphibians: caecilians; salamanders, newts, and mud puppies; and frogs and toads. All amphibians are vertebrates, which means they have a backbone/spine. They are also cold blooded, so their body temperature changes depending on the environment. One thing unique to an amphibian is that they breathe through their skin, instead of their lungs.
Reptiles
Reptiles are cold blooded, which means they can regulate their body temperature according to the environment. They are also vertebrates, which means they have a backbone. There are four main groups of reptiles: turtles and tortoises; lizards and snakes; crocodiles and alligators; and the tuatara. Many reptiles spend their time on land, but some do in the water as well. Reptiles have dry skin covered with scales or bony plates and usually lay soft-shelled eggs. Reptiles dominate in inhospitable areas such as the desert. Reptile species can be found in all types of habitat except polar ice and tundra.
Comparing Reptiles and Amphibians
There are a few differences between Reptiles and Amphibians. Amphibians go through larval stage, like the tadpole turning into frog. Reptiles, on the other hand, do not go through this stage. Also their skin is different. The amphibian has have moist skin, a reptile has scaly skin. Amphibians live "double lives", they live on land and water throughout their lives unlike reptiles. Reptiles also breathe with their lungs, while an Amphibian breathes through their gills until the lungs develop. Both are cold blooded, which means their body temperature changes depending on their surrounding environment. They also have another thing in common, they produce by laying eggs.
