The Buzz
Ms. Larrabee's 1st Grade Class!
The Buzz This Week (4/4 - 4/8)
Writing: We're beginning a new writing unit where we'll be writing different opinion and persuasive pieces. At the beginning of the week we'll learn the difference between facts and opinions. We'll also practice giving specific reasons to support one's opinions. Towards the end of the week, we'll begin writing an opinion piece.
Reading: We're finishing up our studies with non-fiction this week and possibly some of next. As we read non-fiction texts, the kids will start comparing and contrasting as well as taking notes on their own as they read. I'll have the kids chose one non-fiction book to read, take notes over the text and present what they learned to the class.
Word Work: Our studies in vocabulary will be with the 'au', 'aw' and 'alk' digraphs in words such as walk, jaw and audio. The new sight words we'll be practicing include: say, through, where, help, great.
Social Studies: We've started our economics unit. So far we've learned about our wants and needs. We've also discussed how to spend our money wisely in regards to our wants and needs. This week we're talking about jobs. We'll read Bear About Town by Stella Blackstone and When I Grow Up by Al Yankovic. We'll discuss necessary tools, uniforms and required work for different jobs. The students will also decide what they want to be when they grow up, conduct research about that job and present what the job entails to the class.
Math: We've completed a lot of surveys and collected a lot of data. The kids have explored on their own many ways to represent data. We've also asked and answered many questions about the data we've collected. This week we'll start learning about different types of graphs and how we can collect and show data on a graph.

Last Week...
(3/28 - 4/1)
We filled our Marble jar last week and voted to have free gym time for our party! The kids celebrated their good behavior by playing basketball, rolling on scooters, jump roping and playing with each other!
Flat Stanley visited our classroom last week from Nicholas' previous class in Indiana. We gave Flat Stanley a tour of Keysor and took pictures of the different places we learn and play. We also wrote a letter describing the different places we took Flat Stanley to. We mailed him back to Indiana on Friday.
Last, but not least, we had a blast on our field trip to the Magic House last Thursday! We spent the morning learning how to reduce, reuse and recycle in the Superkids Save the World exhibit! We also had a guided tour of different places to explore in the Magic House. We then ate lunch outside and re-entered to explore the Magic House in small groups of four! Enjoy the pictures below!
