HIGHER EDUCATION COMES TO FLORENCE
During Florence's early years, parents were naturally concerned that their children receive at least a basic education. Even from the town's beginning in 1818, though, the sights of the city's planners looked well into the future in terms of more advanced educational opportunities. Thus, they gave the street just one block east of Court Street the name it bears today: Seminary. For, you see, they envisioned a college or seminary on the full city block reserved for it. Sure enough, in 1847 the Florence Female College opened its doors in a handsome building located where the U.S. Post Office stands today. In 1855, the college was placed under the aegis of the Presbyterian Synod; therefore, its name was changed to the Florence Female Synodical College, with Reverend W.H. Mitchell, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, as its first president. Between 1847 and 1912, two other colleges for women existed for a period of time: the Baptist University for Women on Seymore Street and the Bailey Springs University for Women on Bailey Springs Road. In 1855, LaGrange College in Colbert County moved to Florence. It experienced a series of name changes, culminating in the present-day University of North Alabama. So, along with elementary and high schools, both private and public, that have existed in Florence since 1820, our great city has also been the home of excellent colleges and universities.
