Fulmore Middle School Newsletter
Week of 11/16/2015
From the Principal
Greetings Falcon Families!
Congratulations to the second six weeks students who received a Falcon Pride award today (AKA “the whole package” award). Each six weeks, teachers discuss students who demonstrate qualities that go above and beyond in: good citizenship, academic improvement, leadership, positive or improved attitude, and perseverance. Our Falcon Pride Honorees are:
· Sixth Grade: Sophia, Robert, Alex and Dulce.
· Seven Grade: Jeremiah, Makayla, Elijah and Alexandra.
· Eighth Grade: Aaliyah, Herschell, Jorge and Allegra.
A huge shout-out to the dedicated efforts all our Falcons who tested this week in Science, Social Studies, and Writing. Our students took their time, used their instructional strategies, and paid strong attention to detail which was evident in students showing their work. We are proud of all our students and are confident that trend will not only continue next week, but also during regular classroom instruction. Next week students will be taking the Reading and Math MOY 1.
Here are several tips that can prepare your child for successful testing:
· Set a regular bed time that allows eight to ten hours of sleep each night. To get a good night’s rest only before the test is not good enough; sleep habits must be regular.
· Have a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of water.
· Talk with your child about the importance of doing her/his best at all times and that extra attention to details during assessments is a must! Assessments are an opportunity for students to show off what they know and are an opportunity for teachers to see where strengths and/or areas of growth are still needed for instructional purposes.
· Encourage your child to take her/his time during assessments; however, day dreaming and napping are not acceptable. STAAR is a timed test, and we want students to get in the practice of self-pacing.
Exciting events are coming up fast at Fulmore. Tonight and next week, our Falcon thespians perform, Zink: the Myth, the Legend, the Zebra. Our Falcons have been working hard at this poignant performance. This play will also be performed at One Act Festival.
Also not to be missed next week, is our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics) Night. Teachers have been working hard to create an exhilarating evening for Falcons, family, and friends. Teachers and community members will be presenting activities in all areas of STEAM that will prove to be personal, meaningful, relevant, and engaging to all learners. We hope to see you here at Fulmore on Tuesday, November 17 from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m.
Please mark your calendars for the December 5th Middle School Choice Fair. Fulmore MS is hosting this year, and all of Austin ISD middle schools will be represented. If you are interested in being a Fulmore ambassador for this event please contact Ms. Quintanilla who will put you on our schedule. We are hoping to have a huge flock of Falcons, both parents and students. Please encourage all prospective candidates and their families to attend. It will be grand!!
Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend,
Lisa A. Bush

Gifted and Talented
We have finished the "collection" phase of the Gifted and Talented Identification Process! The last step is to take all of the work samples, teacher observations, and surveys to the GT committee for review! Once the committee has viewed the portfolios and determined which students qualify for the Gifted and Talented Program, parents will be notified via mail on whether or not their child was identified as GT (usually around the middle of December)! Any student needing a class adjustment to comply with their new GT status will have their schedule changed at semester!
Box Tops:
We have officially begun collecting Box Tops!!!! Please help support Fulmore raise money for a full-body falcon mascot costume by participating in our Box Tops for Education fundraiser! There is no extra cost to you, simply choose groceries with a pink “Box Top for Education” stamp on it, clip the Box Top Stamp, and send it to school with your student! General Mills will give us $.10 for every Box Top we collect! We have turned it into a competition between SEL classes, and are keeping track of who is in the lead- so far, Ms. Michelson's SEL is is our top collector for the school!!! Feel free to send the Box Tops on the collection paper that went home with your child, in a baggie or in an envelope (just be sure to label their SEL teacher)!!!
Thank you!
