From the Principal's Desk…
Hello Parents and Carers,
This week I am writing the newsletter as unfortunately Tracey is unwell. We wish her a speedy recovery.
I have decided to take a look at our school values and how they have been displayed/lived over the last couple of weeks. There are certainly a lot of amazing things happening around Healesville Primary School. Our children have many fantastic opportunities, and our teachers and support staff are working hard to provide opportunities for all.
Community – Last Wednesday night we held our Family Numeracy Night. It was fantastic to see parents/carers sitting with their children having a good time, working together to solve maths problems. Thankyou to all the families who came along and if you missed it, try and come along next year. This week is Education Week and Family Numeracy Night allowed us to showcase our school and in particular our mathematics program. Over the last two years our staff have been spending a lot of time working on new approaches to teaching mathematics, based around allowing students to engage with a task which is unfamiliar, applying strategies they have stored in their maths toolkit and then explaining their thinking to the class, whilst also listening to other students thinking and reasoning and then coming to a common understanding about how best to tackle the task. Family Numeracy Night allowed families to see some of these types of tasks in action.
Confidence – On Wednesday 50 students represented our school at the District Cross Country Carnival. They competed with confidence and qualified to represent the school due to their performance in the House Cross Country. It was fantastic to see so many students trying their hardest and giving their all, representing our school with pride. Congratulations to Lewis C, Ruby C, Cody R and Brookley H who all placed in the top 3 in their events. All students who placed in the top 9 will have the opportunity to compete at the Division Cross Country in a couple of weeks.
Learning- Senior students just finished 7 days at swimming lessons, refining and learning new skills. It was great to see students improving as the program progressed. Middle school and junior school students will take part in the swimming program in terms 3 and 4 respectively.
Respect – On Friday May 13 we hosted Do It For Dolly Day where students were asked to wear something blue and bring a gold coin to support this cause – the school raised $292.50 to donate to this great cause. Students learnt about being respectful and safe in online environments.
Finally, it has been great to see the new laptop program rolled out around the school and thanks to Sharon G for all her work on this.
Thanks,
Chris
