The Compass Notes
January 21st, 2022
A Compass Note:
As parents, it doesn't always feel like we see positive examples on television to point to for our kids and stop to say, "look at their character and the courage it took to do the right thing." With that thought in mind, on December 11th the 14th ranked University of Houston played at the 6th ranked University of Alabama. The game ended ugly to the point at which the University of Houston's coach had to apologize for the team's conduct during and after the game. Houston lost the game by one point 82-83. What has stood out the most since that game, though has been the actions of some of the players on the University of Houston at the conclusion of the game. At the conclusion of the game, some of the Houston players and staff responded negatively and inappropriately in anger and frustration at losing the game. However, one particular player chose to respond differently, and this stood out. (Check out the video linked below.)
Why do we share this? First, because social media is everywhere and someone always seems to be watching and filming. Second, because look at what the actions of one player stirred. What did team coaches and staffers do when they noticed his actions toward the very end of the clip? They began helping as well! The act of good stirred others to do good as well. Now the same can be true for the reverse. If we wanted, we could show a video of how some players and staff chose to kick chairs and flip trash cans over on exiting the court, while other players chose to ignore it and do nothing. However, we felt that this represents an illustration of how we can choose to respond to situations. What an example for us and our kids to see of how to respond when met with adversity or struggle!
Hope that this can be used to stir some conversations with your kiddos.

You have most likely heard a lot about staffing shortages in schools throughout the metro area. Our district has also been impacted by the shortage due to staff illness and lack of substitutes. We begin with finding coverage for classrooms that have the greatest impact on students, and are doing our best to find creative ways to cover our classes. We have worked to ensure that we provide students a normal school day and minimize the impact caused by these shortages. We share this information to communicate that we need more coverage. If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a substitute teacher. We would appreciate the help! If you or you know of someone who may want to substitute in our schools please apply using the below link.
