Lunch Times
Joining your child for lunch is a fun and enjoyable tradition that Rockbrook is pleased to support when your schedule allows. For this purpose we have designated a guest table during our lunch period where you and your child can share a meal and each other’s company. To ensure that there is enough space for our out-of-school guests we ask that families eat with their own children only. When room allows, guests may also sit at the regular lunch table with the class. If you would like a school lunch, please make your reservation with the office before 9 a.m.
Lunch Times
K-1 Lunch: 11:35-12:00 (11:24-11:48 on Wednesdays)
2-3 Lunch: 12:00-12:25 (11:48-12:12 on Wednesdays)
4-5 Lunch: 12:25-12:50 (12:12-12:36 on Wednesdays)
6 Lunch: 12:50-1:15 (12:36-1:00 on Wednesdays)
NWEA MAP Testing
NWEA MAP Testing is occurring this week and next. Students in grades 3-6 will be participating in NWEA MAP (Measure of Academic Progress) testing in reading and math. These tests will be given three times throughout the year, and further information will be provided about results following administration. Classroom teachers will communicate the specific dates and times of their testing. For existing 4th and 6th graders, these are the same type of tests students took last year. We encourage a good night’s rest, a good breakfast and a positive attitude. Please feel free to contact Mr. Higginbotham with any questions.
PBIS - School and Home Expectations
Over the past couple of weeks, your child has been reviewing the many positive expectations that help make Rockbrook a safe, respectful, and responsible place for students to enjoy. In their classrooms, they have discussed expectations individual to their grade and teacher. A critical part of Positive Behavior Intervention Supports is clearly defined expectations and common language in implementing them. Our 3 school rules are Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible. As such we invite you to take the time to discuss what your Home Expectations are and to add these to your own expectation poster (click to download). At the bottom of the poster is a small cut off slip that your child can fill out and return in order to be entered in a special drawing. Thank you in advance for supporting positive behaviors at Rockbrook.

Westside MTSS - Muti-Tiered Systems of Support
Westside Community Schools continues the implementation of MTSS, which stands for Multi-Tiered System of Supports.
What is MTSS? MTSS is a process of providing instruction and support to promote the academic and behavioral success of all children. Individual children’s progress & skills are monitored and results are used to make decisions about further instruction and intervention. The MTSS process is flexible and designed to meet the needs of all students. This process allows for a continuum of support based entirely on students’ individual needs. This support may be provided with other students by the classroom teacher or other support staff, either within or outside the classroom.
What does this mean for my child? A key component of the MTSS process is that all children receive high quality instruction in their classroom. Universal screenings are used to review the progress of all students and are given three times per year. As a result of the screening, students may be identified as needing supplemental intervention in addition to instruction they are receiving in their classroom. If your child is identified as needing intervention you will receive notification. Please contact your child’s building principal with questions.
Counselor's Corner
Attendance Awareness
Studies show that chronic absenteeism is a red alert that students are headed for academic trouble
and eventually for dropping out of high school. Chronic absenteeism are students who miss a
total of 18 days of the entire school year.
Fact: Only 17 % of students absent 10% or more of the school year in Kindergarten and 1st grade can read at grade level after the 3rd grade.
Here are some helpful tips you can use to help your child come to school on time every day.
Set a regular bedtime and morning routine.
Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
Don’t let your child stay home unless she is truly sick.
If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, the school
counselor, or other parents for advice on how to make him/her feel comfortable.
Develop some backup plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a
family member, a neighbor or another parent.
Avoid medical appointments and extended trips when school is in session.

Weather Dismissal
Rockbrook Families, thanks for your patience with our recent weather dismissal. These don't happen often, but it's helpful for both teachers and families to have a clear plan for when this needs to occur. Our procedure for weather dismissal is the same as recess. When temperatures are too cold or when there is significant rain or any thunder or lightning we will dismiss from the gym for grades 1-6 and from the south end of the building for PreK and Kindergarten. Adults will monitor the lot and call in on radios for individual students to come out to cars. Families may also come inside to check their child out.
