SHARING AND COMMUNICATING WITH GROUP WORK
Building relationships and a positive class culture are essential to student learning. Students learn best when they have their needs met, which include the sense of feeling accepted and valued. There are many ways we work on this throughout the day, between adult-student and student-student. Now, consider a smaller lens when thinking about positive class culture; think about how this is supported not only in general, but within activities in your classroom. In what ways are relationships and positive class culture supported in group or team work?
View the video below to get an idea of how one class uses social skills goals to help build their class culture. Many of you use similar strategies to support students learning to collaborate and to share ideas with one another. Use this visual and example to reflect on how you support students in group work.
A few things to reflect upon:
- What social skills do you include in how you expect student groups to perform or function? How are these modeled and communicated?
- What expectations do you have student teams consider prior to their work together and how is that communicated?
- Consider how you would facilitate students to self assess on this practice? What is the effect self assessing has on their learning?
Happy sailing! Arrrrgh Mateys!
