Hansen Weekly Update
January 6, 2023
Hi Hansen Students, Parents, and Families!
Welcome to 2023! I hope that all of our students and families enjoyed a restful and relaxing winter vacation and that the new year is off to a good start for all of you.
We have had a good first week back, filled with plenty of excitement and energy. While the weather has been gloomy, inside the building, our students and staff have returned ready to go and are working hard!
Next week, we are looking forward to our 4th and 5th Grade students participating in 'History at Play' as a historical actor will be visiting and playing the part of Revolutionary War hero, Deborah Sampson. We are excited for this opportunity, and thank you to our CAPT for providing this enrichment for our students next week!
Please enjoy some of this week's highlights below...

Universal Screening Assessments
We will be using the STAR 360 universal screener this year as our universal screener. This assessment is designed to help us identify students who may need additional support and/or intervention in reading and math. Students will be assessed three times this year: Fall, Winter and Spring. The Winter assessment window for grades K-5 is currently open, and will run between January 3- January 13. This will be the first universal screening with STAR Early Literacy for Kindergarten.
Students will need to bring their school issued iPad or Chromebook to school on days that they are testing. Parents should expect an email from their teacher with more specifics on the dates for their class.
Teachers will also be using the STAR Curriculum Based Measures to monitor progress.
More information is available on the Renaissance parent page: Parent Resources

Elementary Concerts - January 17!
On Tuesday, January 17 we will hold our winter music concerts for parents/guardians of our 4th and 5th grade performers!
The concert will be from 1:45 - 2:45 in the Hansen cafeteria, and we invite parents/guardians of our 4th grade strings players, and our 5th graders.
Save the date, and we hope to see you there!
REMINDER: Winter Health Update from Nurse Bethany and Nurse Kathy
The cold weather has arrived and that means an increase in cough and cold symptoms. We are seeing a lot of stuffy noses and sore throats. If you’re able, please send your child in with an extra box of tissues for their class. Also, please remind your student the best way to cough is into their elbow like a vampire and good hand hygiene includes washing all areas of hands for 20 seconds.
Canton Public Schools guidelines regarding required absences can be found here (p.71-74), but we’re including them below for your convenience.
Illness Requiring Absence from School
Upon return from any absence, students must provide a note describing the reason for the absence. If your child is out of school for five days or more you should notify the school nurse. Any school absence for five or more consecutive days requires a note from a health care provider which should be presented to the school nurse before the student returns to school. Without medical documentation these are considered unexcused absences.
When you call the absentee line of your school, please specify the nature of the illness. *Hansen absentee hotline is (781) 821-5085 x1
Here are some guidelines to follow. Keep your child home if he/she/they:
● Has evidence of a newly developed cold (runny, stuffy nose, coughing, sneezing). The greatest period of contagion is the first 2-3 days after onset of symptoms.
● Has Covid-19 or Covid-19 symptoms.
● Has the flu or flu symptoms.
● Has an elevated temperature, over 100° (degrees) within the past 24 hours.
● Has a suspicious rash.
● Has pain or discharge from eye(s) or ear(s).
● Has had an upset stomach, vomiting or diarrhea within the past 24 hours.
● Has a contagious disease (i.e. strep throat, tonsillitis, bronchitis, conjunctivitis, etc.) until he/she/they has been seen and treated by a doctor with at least 24 - 48 hours of treatment, is fever free for 24 hours, and feels well enough to be able to participate in school activities.
If your child should develop any of these or other symptoms hindering the child’s ability to learn during school hours, the school nurse will notify you and the child will be dismissed.
