NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS FRIDAY, MAY 8
2015-16 Middle School Hours *IMPORTANT NOTICE*
The fine details are still being worked out and we will communicate them as they become available. In regards to middle school athletics we will continue with the normal start time. During the time from dismissal to practice on Wednesdays we will provide coverage and supervision for student-athletes as they wait for their practice to begin.
8th Grade Assembly
- This last day of school is a “dress up” day for all students. Dress up does not mean formal attire; however, we will be asking students to dress a notch or two above their normal daily school attire. All school rules apply regarding attire.
- Parking is limited because of the neighborhood that surrounds Franklin, and this assembly is typically well attended, so please plan accordingly.
We look forward to seeing families and friends as we celebrate our 8th grade class. Click on the following link to view the letter: https://crk12.ae-admin.com/assets/23/6/2015_8th_Grade_Parent_Letter_on_Letterhead2.pdf
Hy-Vee Receipt Challenge Results
The results are in and all the Hy-Vee receipts have been totaled. Everyone has done an amazing job for Franklin. Just this past week over $108,000 in receipts have been brought into Franklin. That combined with what has been brought previously this year brings our total to over $269,506 in receipts. That means we will receive a check from Hy-Vee for over $1347.53. That surpasses what we did last year. Great job Bolts!!
A big thank you goes out to everyone who participated. We would also like to especially thank Ms. Cornell and Ms. Dobler’s classes for totaling all of the receipts. It was quite a job!!
The class with the most receipts and the winner of the class pizza party is…..Ms. Rust’s 6th hour class. They brought in a total of $13,181 in receipts. Ms. Shanley, Mr. Rehn and Ms. Willson’s classes were all close.
We are done taking receipts for this year, but receipts after May 1 will count towards our next year's total.
Last but not least, we need to thank the Cedar Rapids and Marion Hy-Vee Stores for this wonderful opportunity. We are very grateful for your support!
Have you volunteered this year??? Please Join Us!!!
Outstanding Building Volunteer
On Monday, April 27 the Cedar Rapids Community School District honored our outstanding volunteers at the ELSC. We are fortunate to have a number of great volunteers that give their time and effort to our staff and students. We're able to do what we do in large part to the help by our volunteers. It's not too late to become a volunteer. Please call our main office for information. This year's Outstanding Volunteer at Franklin was Ann Eganhouse-Busta. Below is the excerpt from the program.

Spring Concert Times Adjusted
- 6th Grade: Concert begins at 5:45 (Call Times: Vocal & Band 5:30, Orchestra 5:20)
- 7th Grade: Concert begins at 7:00 (Call Times: Vocal & Band 6:45, Orchestra 6:40)
- 8th Grade: Concert begins at 8:15 (Call Times: Vocal & Band 8:00, Orchestra 7:55)
We appreciate the support you've offered to these groups and hopefully the minor adjustments help that stress level of getting your students dropped off and being able to find a parking spot. Assuming the weather cooperates we will allow families to park on the lawn north of our northside parking lot.
Back to School Extravaganza (Thursday, August 20)
For those of you with students at multiple schools you'll find that this will probably be a busy evening given the limit of days we have to work with before that first day. Put the date on your calendar...it will be here before we know it.
8th Grade Service Learning: Mission of Hope
Last week, Ms Anderson’s 8th grade class participated in a community service PARRT activity. The class went to the Mission of Hope a few blocks away from school and served lunch to the people in need. They filled trays, made conversation, washed dishes and observed. The experience meant so much more to them as participants than reading about it or watching a video. A whole new perspective on what an education means was presented. They behaved as ladies and gentlemen the entire project and were a credit to Franklin Middle School. I could not have been more proud of a group of students.
News from the Health Office
TO FAMILIES of Current 6th Graders
Tdap Requirement, May 2015
The Iowa Department of Public Health requires a one-time booster dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis-containing vaccine, called Tdap, prior to starting 7th grade.
All students going into 7th grade must have proof of having the Tdap booster shot unless the student has an exemption signed by their health care provider. Your child may have already received the vaccine and simply needs to provide proof to the school. Documentation of the Tdap vaccine will need to be provided to the middle school nurse prior to the first day of school.
As you schedule required physicals for athletics or if you are in your physician’s office this spring or summer, please ask about this booster vaccine. If you do not have insurance or have questions, please contact Franklin Health office at 558-2076 or Franklin School nurse, Sharon Neilly at 558-1242.
FREE Dental Sealants are coming to Franklin Middle School May 26, 27, and 28.
Provided by Haacap and St. Luke’s Dental Clinic. Information and a consent form will be coming home with your student on Monday, May 11. Return completed form to the health office. All Franklin students qualify for this free opportunity.
8th Grade Celebration Party
An invitation will be going home with your student in May. The students will be asked to pay a small entrance fee with scholarships being available. The drinks and a snack will be provided by the Cedar Rapids Country Club but we are asking for cash donations from parents to help cover additional expenses. If you are able to provide a cash donation, it would be greatly appreciated. Any and all amounts are welcomed!! Chaperones are also needed for the party.
