General News! Week of January 9-13 th
Happy Monday!
This week we will be sending home permission slips for our after school camps which will begin this Thursday. Some students may be asked to join us on a weekly basis while others may be just invited for a single afternoon. We must have a signed form in order for students to stay.
In November we began a new program, RRAP, in an effort to better support our students needs. As we move into this semester we will be making a few adjustments to our groupings. Each Wednesday, students will travel with these groups to each of the content areas to work on specific skills. After lunch, students who have may have missed school, or any assignments, will have an opportunity to get caught up and back on track. Students with all assignments completed will have the opportunity for some independent reading time, internet work, small group work,etc...This should help cut down on the number of students who have missing assignments this quarter. In order for us all to get the greatest benefits from these sessions it will be important for students to be present and ready to participate.
A letter is going home with report cards for students in both (Math and ELA)AP Prep classes will provide details of an upcoming Dual Enrollment class for 9th grade. Please keep an eye out for this as well as other upcoming reminders about the meeting, being held for parents, on Feb. 7 from 6-7:30pm at CCHS.

Social Studies- Mr. Salser
The students will be diving into Reconstruction at the end of the Civil War and how the US was put back together. We will focus on Lincoln's plan, the Congressional plan, and Andrew Johnson's plans for Reconstruction. We will also be writing about Abraham Lincoln, Harriet Tubman, and Henry McNeil Turner on three separate days. I am checking to see if the students can explain the roles all three played in history.
Science- Mrs. Allen
This week in Science, we are finishing Sound and moving into the Electromagnetic Spectrum. Our test on Sound Waves has been moved to this Tuesday, as our lab stations took longer than expected last week. Students should continue studying the Parts of a Wave Kahoot to keep them on track for the upcoming assessments. They can also go through clever.com using their school gmail login to access MobyMax. This will help them study, and can also earn some extra credit! Let’s have another awesome week! J
Math- Mrs. McKinney
Math- Students need to study volume for the final part of the mastery assessment tomorrow. Students will answer 4 questions and be finished with the test. Beginning on Tuesday, the students will start learning about functions. Tuesday homework will be defining terms for the new unit. Wednesday the students will learn how to represent relations in different ways. There are four representations for relations; tables, graphs, equations, mapping diagrams, and ordered pairs. The students will be expected to identify the domain and range, as well as know the different names for the input and the output. Thursday and Friday the students will be practicing identifying functions and relations. Vocabulary will be the main focus this week.
Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
In language arts:
This week we will continue reviewing the elements of an argumentative essay. It is important that our students are able to properly compose any style of writing that they are presented with as a prompt, as well as complete their piece in a limited amount of time. This will be much of our focus during this quarter.
We will be reading a variety of pieces of literature to help us practice the elements that make a strong argumentative essay. We will practice identifying and creating a "thesis statement", selecting textual evidence that will support our claim/argument, as well as evidence that supports the counterargument, and wrapping it all up with a sound rebuttal.
Each block has a representative and an alternative for our SMMS Spelling Bee.This Friday, January 13th will be their opportunity to show us that they are ready to take on the other contestants and show us what they've got. The winner of our school contest will move onto the County Spelling Bee.
Students have been introduced to their new homework reading assignment for this quarter. The format for NewsELA.com is very similar to our Tween Tribune readings. Students are being asked to complete 3 readings each week, 2 of these will be selected by me, and the 3rd is their own choice. One of the articles that I have assigned to them will also be one that they are asked to respond to in writing.
We will also continue this quarter with our independent choice readings...Book 1 is due by Jan. 20th. Students will be responsible for 4 independent books this quarter, so they will only have 2 weeks for each book if they did not take advantage of completing one over winter break. It is totally doable, but it requires them to stay on track.
