Dyslexia affects 1 in 5 people, or almost 20% of our population. Dyslexics have average to above average intelligence, which means that dyslexia affects those with average, above average, and gifted intelligence. Dyslexics try to use the right side of their brain when completing language activities. This is why dyslexics are usually very creative! There are many famous dyslexics. A message from our counselor:
Fun Facts About the Texas State Fair
If you did not get a chance to attend the State Fair this year, you can share these fun facts about the Texas State Fair with your child.
- During World War I in 1918, the fairgrounds were closed to serve as a temporary encampment for the United States Army.
- The fair grounds have yet to move locations since the very first Opening Day. We think it’s safe to say this will likely never change.
- On one of the saddest days in history, Big Tex erupted into flames and came tumbling down. The good news? When he was rebuilt, they made him a whopping five feet taller than the original. How’s that for ‘Everything’s bigger in Texas’?
- The Fair is a non-profit organization. Not only are you having the time of your life, you’re helping to ensure the quality of life of the park and others in the community.
- Fletcher’s corny dogs came into existence in 1942.
- It is the longest running Fair in the nation. The Fair opened for the first time on October 25, 1886.
- In the fall of 1929, The Texas Longhorns went head-to-head with the Oklahoma Sooners for their first showcase in what’s now known as the Red River Rivalry.
- Two United States Presidents have visited the State Fair of Texas – William Howard Taft in 1909 and Woodrow Wilson in 1911.
- Elvis Presley performed at the Cotton Bowl in the 1950s.
- In 1886, the fairgrounds were on 80 acres. Today, it encompasses a staggering 277 acres – so wear tennis shoes!
A Message from our Grade Levels:
Pre- K/PPCD
Pre-K/PPCD will be working on counting and identifying numbers. Parents are encouraged to count with their children at home. We are also learning about My Family & Friends for the next month.
Don't forget for your kindergartner to listen to or read a fiction story everyday for 10-20 minutes. Please ask what happened in the beginning, middle, and the end of the story. For nonfiction books, ask your child to tell you 3 facts about the book.Enjoy book time!
1st Grade:
Dear First Grade Parent: We are beginning reading groups and intervention groups. Tutoring permission slips went home in the Tuesday envelope.Your students are working hard to learn many new procedures and routines for first grade. Also, they are learning a lot of new strategies to enhance their learning, such as taking a minute or two to breathe is one way we can calm ourselves, so that we are able to think more clearly and make better choices. Please make sure your child is reading for 15-20 minutes a night. Reading helps your student in all school subjects. Reading is the most important skill. We are getting ready to implement ipads in classrooms. Each child must supply their own headphones or earbuds this year.
2nd grade:
Parents, Field Trip money and permission slips should be turned in to your teacher. If you want to attend the field trip, please send $15 and fill out the volunteer forms on risd.voly.org. Please check your child’s folder regularly for information and check their behavior charts. Please remember to send earbuds or headphones to school with your child for use on the iPads.
3rd grade:
Reading books with your children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. Investing as little as 20 minutes a day can be the difference in a lifetime of success or failure for a child. Daily reading helps to foster listening skills, curiosity and gives your child a strong foundation for future reading skills. Children who read 20 minutes per day see 1.8 million words a year!
4th grade:
If your student has been invited to tutoring, please do not forget to turn in the tutoring form signed. Tutoring will be Tuesday Oct.2nd this week.
Please make sure your student has a pair of headphones here at school.
Fourth grade is doing an amazing job showing their PRIDE here at school! We are very proud of them.
5th grade:
Planners are on their way and we will be handing those out as soon as they arrive.
We are working on decimals in math, energy and it’s uses in science, and reading The Legend of Sleepy Hollow while working on persuasive writing and text. Please make sure your child has a working pair of earbuds for the IPads. They cannot work on IStation without them.
We have a unit assessment in reading on Monday/Tuesday and a unit assessment in math on Wednesday/Thursday.
6th grade:
Enterprise City is November 5th all day. Several students still have not purchased planners. They are still $5.
ELL:
It's been an exciting week! Mrs. Crisp, Mrs. Hubregsen, and Mrs. Bustamante have enjoyed getting to work with students this week. We all focused on listening attentively to others and speaking to our peers.
A note from our Specials Teachers:
Music
3rd Grade is working hard to learn their program music for Reading Under the Stars! 1st and 2nd grade are getting ready to learn something new! The 6th grade opera trip is coming up soon, and ALL 6th graders need to turn in their signed permission slip and $8 to Ms. Densmore. 5th is writing known notes on a staff, singing and moving! 4th grade is getting ready for a new note on the staff. We are doing this by learning songs that have our new note in it and then we play the singing game that goes with it! Kinder continues to work on their singing voice (matching pitch) and exploring steady beat through movement and playing drums! CHOIR…T-shirt form are due this week. There are also still a few kiddo’s who haven’t turned in the dues. Please try to get that in asap or communicate with Mrs. Allen when she can expect it ☺
Library:
Students will just be checking out this week for 15 minutes. Everyone must sign up using the Doodle link here. Doodle Sign up Thursday the LITE will be out. If you sign up for that day you are doing so knowing I will not be there to support you.
