World War II
This tells the story of what started, happened, and ended World War II.
In the 1930's, Adolf Hitler was the dictator of Germany. Then, in 1939, he decided he was going to take over the world. With the help of Italy, Japan, and a few other countries, they took over countries in Europe and Asia. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941, the Americans declared war on Japan. The enemy took over half the countries in the Soviet Union, every country in Europe except for five, two of the countries in North Africa, half of China, the Korean peninsula, and every island country in Asia except for Australia and New Zealand. The war ended in Europe when Hitler killed himself in 1945 and in Asia in the same year, 1945, when the Americans dropped two atomic bombs on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. If the United States didn't drop the bombs, then the Japanese would have killed every prisoner of war in Japan.
Germany, Italy: two countries in Europe.
Japan: an island country in Asia.
Pearl Harbor: a major U.S. naval base in Hawaii.
Soviet Union: (official name: Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) a nation formerly located in eastern Europe and northwest Asia.
Atomic bombs: a bomb that derives its destructive power from the rapid release of nuclear energy by fission of heavy atomic nuclei, causing damage through heat, blast, and radioactivity.
Prisoner of War: a person who has been captured and imprisoned by the enemy in war.
Five countries in Europe that the enemy didn't take over: Great Britain, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, and Sweden.
Two countries in Africa the enemy didn't take over: Tunisia and Libya.
