Greetings from the Principal
Dear Riverview families,
Last week, students and educators celebrated Read Across America here at Riverview, and the highlight was on the importance and joy of reading. Teachers use many strategies to help students develop strong reading habits, ranging from phonemic awareness and phonics activities in the primary grades, all the way up to reading comprehension of multiple text types in intermediate grades. While these strategies are and very important to reading success for college and career readiness, the power of time spent reading outside of the school day cannot be underestimated!
Reading at home is an opportunity to expand student vocabulary, build background information, and improve accuracy and fluency. It can also be an enjoyable time to spend with your child. Look for ways to read, write, and tell stories together. Encourage your child to re-read their favorite books, or take turns reading aloud so children have fluent, accurate reading role models. Choral reading can help children become more fluent and confident readers. Making predictions or asking questions can inspire students to dig deeper into a story and improve their comprehension.
Riverview teachers partner with the PTA to reward students for developing the love and habit of reading that will benefit students in all aspects of their education. The reading program is exciting, and students and classes are recognized on a monthly basis. Please remember your student can turn their reading minutes in every three months regardless of reading minutes, and still receive positive recognition! Students who meet other requirements are also eligible for other incentives, such as Schlitterbahn tickets or T-Bones tickets.
Thank you for your support, and make it a great week before Spring Break!
