Referendum Vote - March 13, 2018
February 2018
Dear Lyncrest Families,
On March 13, Fair Lawn residents will be asked to vote on a referendum approving $25 million in funding for an expansion of Memorial and Thomas Jefferson Middle Schools, and air conditioning for our auditoriums in the middle and high schools to best accommodate for performing arts programming.
Offering optimal class sizes at the elementary level is a priority. However, given recent and projected increases in student enrollment (100 students per year for each of the next five years), that has become increasingly difficult, if not impossible. Currently, there are 15 elementary classrooms in district with more than 25 students. To best plan for this growth, we propose transitioning fifth grade students to the middle schools (hence the need for expanding those schools). This will then allow for space at the elementary schools to create more classes with fewer students.
According to a review of research from the Center for Public Education, smaller classes in the early grades can boost student academic achievement.
Today, total enrollment at Lyncrest School is 256 students. Class size at Lyncrest School is as follows:
Grade K- 20 and 19
Grade 1- 18 and 16
Grade 2- 22 and 23
Grade 3- 22 and 20
Grade 4- 24 and 24
Grade 5- 25 and 23
This proposal has been created with an understanding of the research that experienced and prepared teachers are a critical factor in the success or failure of class size reduction programs. To enhance the effect of reduced class size on academic achievement, the district is committed to ongoing professional development for teachers and a rigorous curriculum across all grades.
If you have any questions about the referendum, please do not hesitate to contact me via email or by phone at 201-794-5555 Ext. 3600.
Respectfully,
Mrs. Kelly Diee
Principal, Lyncrest School
A note from Mrs. Caruso, School Nurse
During the winter months, we are experiencing an increase in viruses such as the Flu, Strep Throat, Stomach and Respiratory Illnesses. To prevent the spread of illnesses, we recommend your child stay home from school if they are experiencing any symptoms that may be contagious. Please consider the following guidelines.
When making a decision about sending your child to school, it's best to keep them home if they have any of these symptoms:
*Fever greater than 100°F
*Vomiting, nausea, diarrhea, or failure to eat a normal breakfast
*Runny nose, coughing, and sneezing
* Sore throat, swollen glands, or an earache
*Unusual drowsiness or listlessness
Please remember in order for your child to return to school they must be free from vomiting, diarrhea, or fever (without fever reducing medication) for 24 hours. Also, if your child is prescribed an antibiotic for Strep Throat or any other type of contagious illness they must be on an antibiotic for 24 hours prior to returning.
Let’s stop the cycle of infection by keeping our students and staff healthy!
