Bible "Must Knows"
- It's a library of 73 books.
- The Bible is split into two books: Old (before Jesus) and New Testament (after Jesus' birth).
- It is a story of God's relationship with his people.
- It isn't a history or science book or political announcement.
- The Bible and Jesus Christ are the Word of God.
The Old Testament
Grouped into these sections:
- Pentateuch - means "five books"; contains the early stories, history and laws of the Israelites
- The Historical Books - ranged around 1250 BC to 100 BC; about Israelites staying in the Promised Land, their kings' rise/fall, scattering into Exile then later coming back to the Promised Land
- The Wisdom and Poetry Books - hymns, poems, proverbs and stories
- The Prophets - people who speak God's Word; contains recorded prophecies and stories of 16 of Israel's prophets; also condemnation of Israel's idolatry, false worship and unjust practices; prophecies of comfort and promise for the people of God
- The Development of the Old Testament - first passed down by mouth (oral tradition) then by 1000 BC events started being documented; began being written in Hebrew then Greek
