Happy New Year!
East Hampton 2030 Survey Open Until January 24
We invite you--teachers, staff, students, parents, and community members--to partner with us in the creation of the future district vision and mission for the East Hampton Public Schools.
Here are the three questions you will be asked with the survey link button below. You do not need to use sentences to answer the questions. Simply use words or phrases.
1. What matters most in our schools?
2. What skills and knowledge do students need to thrive in the future?
3. What should the classroom of 2030 look like? How will it be different from today?
Thank you for participating in the survey and partnering with us in opening doors to each child's future!

News from the Music Room
Hello Memorial Families! I am so happy to hear all of our students’ singing voices in the music room once again. During the month of December, students experienced some very special winter music activities! Find your student’s grade level below to check them out.
Preschool: Students enjoyed exploring with jingle bells. We discovered that different sets of bells made louder or softer sounds, depending on the size and number of bells! We enjoyed playing jingle bell freeze dance, singing a song about a jingle mouse and a jingle dinosaur, and of course singing “Jingle Bells” while shaking bell sets!
Kindergarten: Students spent this month reinforcing skills they had learned so far such as steady beat, making a perfect match when singing, and describing or performing music that was fast, slow, loud, or soft. They visited centers where they used teamwork and wonder to create music with instruments, to sing and take turns being the “conductor”, and to move to music with scarves! Some classes took turns being soldiers and dancers as they moved to “March” from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite”.
First Grade: Students learned about a new rhythm this month, called the quarter rest! When they see it, they know that there will be one beat of silence in the music! By playing a game called Post Office, students practiced recognizing the correct quarter rest rhythm pattern. Some first graders had fun moving to the song “Sleigh Ride” by Leroy Anderson, taking turns being the horse that pulls classmates in an imaginary sleigh! Other classes took turns being soldiers and dancers as they moved to “March” from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite”.
Second Grade: This month, students continued to practice their new rhythm (the half note) by reading, writing, and improvising. They played a game called “Rhythm Conversation”, where they tried to carry on a conversation with classmates by speaking in rhythms instead of with words! For some winter fun, many classes used teamwork to play colorful tuned tubes called Boomwhackers while following a play-along video to play winter songs! We also played Freeze Dance using jingle bells!
Third Grade: Third graders explored music from Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite” this month. They found repeating themes in the overture and some classes used teamwork and learned a parachute routine with “Trepak” (The Russian Dance). They also continued to work on recorder skills, while playing songs like “Billy’s Song” and “Hot Cross Buns”. They will begin white belt tests next week! Please help your student remember to practice at least four days per week for at least ten minutes. Be sure to look at the Recorder Karate page on the music website for helpful resources!
Please check out the music room website for more information about the music program. Feel free to reach out at any time by emailing smaldonado@easthamptonct.org.

News from P.E.
Hi everyone,
Nice to see everybody back after our winter vacation, we hope it was relaxing and filled with fun and exploration!
We continue to work on cooperation, sharing, teamwork, sportsmanship, and respect for everyone and everything.
The children are doing great and having fun while getting in the best shape they can!
Here are a few high points for the coming month:
Pre K and K and Grade 1:
We are finishing up with our ball skills, using our hands, and our “basketball skills” unit by mid Jan.
We will begin a unit on cooperative games, with an emphasis on movement, high energy exertion, and spacial awareness.
We will also do a week of stations where the children rotate to various skills stations and physical challenge stations.
In Feb. we will begin our unit with the beachballs, incorporating some fun at the gym-length volleyball net (net height adjusted to each grade/age), and working in partner activities in our “volleyball skills” unit.
Grade 2 and grade 3:
We are finishing up with our basketball skills unit by mid Jan., including our “Basketball Shooting Club”, one of our dozen “Fitness Clubs” we have throughout the year for our ongoing assessment of the skills the children have worked on so hard on developing.
We will have a week of cooperative games, followed by a week of stations where the children will work on several of the “Fitness Clubs” we have already introduced this year.
In Feb. we will start our beachball volleyball skills unit (with grade/age appropriate net height, we have three nets that stretch the entire length of the gym!), individual and partner work, followed by small group activities, serving challenges, our “Volleyball Serving Club”, and ending with a week of modified beachball volleyball games!
Thank you for all the support you provide at home with healthy living examples and fitness based activities and adventures, it makes all the difference in the world, and is fun!
Have nice start to winter (even though the temps this weekend are supposed to be in the 60’s!)!

News From The Art Room
Happy New Year! December through January has been an exciting time in the art room. We were so lucky to have had actual SNOW on multiple occasions! Looking at the snow falling, resting on tree tops, and hearing it crunch under our feet have been such amazing opportunities to appreciate how beautiful the winter can be. We also have enjoyed discussing the various ways we were going to spend our winter break, and look forward to a new year ahead!
In Preschool and Kindergarten, students have been learning and exploring the use of mixed media, and the process of painting to create texture and shape in their works of art. We have explored facets of the winter, including snowflake making, evergreen tree painting, and snowman making. We have learned the practice of "scissor safety", and we are very careful and attentive to this. While cutting, gluing, and painting, we created "Snowmen At Night"! We created unique snow characters with very special qualities! What would a snowman do at night?! Students laughed and enjoyed imagining what a snowman would do at night! We finished our mixed media masterpieces with painting snowfall, and reading the book "Snowmen At Night". We currently have moved into the world of Abstract art, and began this unit with a game, as we learned how to draw shapes and lines to create artwork we cannot recognize! We were so surprised to know how challenging it can be to make artwork that doesn't look like a real object, place, or person. We can't wait to show you how our work comes out!
In First grade, students learned how we can use paint to create beautiful brushstrokes. We learned that certain artists like to pick up their brush and dab, dot, swish, and swirl their paint, while creating a beautiful look for a painting, called brushstrokes. Vincent Van Gogh was famous for his brush strokes, and we looked closely at his paintings to see how he did many different marks with the tip of his brush. We painted with brushstrokes to create our own winter wonderland scene, filled with brushstrokes. We learned special ways to create our own evergreen trees as well, and made the snow fall in our paintings! We spent the first week back in the new year, creating beautiful drawings that reflected our wish for the new year. Learning how to draw a picture that tells a story has been an exciting way to come back to school and practice our responsible and creative art room behavior.
In Second grade, students have been busy working on looking at castles, mansions, and palaces from around the world! In groups, we looked closely at castles from France, Portugal, and Spain. We viewed Mansions from America, and Palaces from France and London. While observing in groups, we looked closely at the details and architecture we could find. Students loved learning when castles were first created during the Medieval times, and were amazed to hear that it took hundreds of years to build a castle- BY HAND! We took what we learned about castles, mansions and palaces, and created our own sketch of a beautiful architectural building, inspired by the ones we observed. We then explored 5 different watercolor techniques and decided where we would add them to complete our watercolor paintings. Crayon Resist, backwash, wet on wet, wet on dry, splatter were the main techniques we learned, and everyone enjoyed their unique qualities.
In Third grade, students have become more and more independent during "Choice Art". Students are progressing through projects, and are earning stamps in all areas of our art curriculum. It is amazing to watch as students determine the best media for their own works of art. Synthesizing as they work, students make decisions, adjustments, and improvements to their work and use student-centered rubrics to stay on track towards success. We have learned about Cubism, portraiture, abstract art, and landscape works of art. We have a lot more to learn as the year progresses. Please ask your child about their individual progress so far in art class, as our goal is to achieve 6 media categories by the end of third grade. We are almost half way there, and I am finding that all of us are on track to do so!
GREAT NEWS! All students are nearly complete with their "Art To Remember" masterpieces, which are going to be sent out this month. For the first time, students were guided to create their own choice art project, and selected their own subject matter, and their own inspiration, as well as their own choice of media for this special work of art. Please keep an eye out for your child's individual order forms for our annual art fundraiser, coming home this month!
NEEDED IN THE ART ROOM! Please send in recyclables with your child on their designated art day! The art room is looking for cereal boxes, granola bar boxes, snack boxes, paper towel tubes, newspaper, and shoe boxes! Thank you in advance!
