A Message from the Superintendent
Dr. Byrne currently serves as our Assistant Superintendent, responsible for delivering all educational services. She came to Alvord three years ago from the Walnut Valley Unified School District, where she served as the Director of Educational Services. She has also served as an elementary school principal and an assistant principal in her career at Walnut and Corona-Norco Unified School District, respectively.
Dr. Byrne will introduce herself to the Alvord Community in the near future. Congratulations Dr. Byrne!
GIRL SCOUTS OF SAN GORGONIO COUNCIL GIFT ALVORD CARES
When young people are connected to new experiences their worlds expand. That's the philosophy of the Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio, the local chapter serving students in Alvord and the City of Riverside. The chapter has been a great partner supporting Alvord Cares, a volunteer organization created by School Board President Carolyn Wilson and friends to assist families and students in need. In addition to donating hundred upon hundreds of Girl Scout cookies every year, the local troop donates their time and effort to help the Alvord Cares volunteer team throughout the year when people-power is needed to organize and distribute. Pictured: Parents Jiranda Strebel and Adriana Guzman are joined by students' Emmaline Smith and Eliana Guzman, along with Trustees' Wilson, Moreno, and Vega among Alvord staff.
CONGRATULATIONS ANDREA SANCHEZ, LA SIERRA HIGH SCHOOL
Annually, the Bilingual Educators Succeeding Together (BEST) Association conducts a writing contest for seniors. The top essays are awarded a scholarship to support their dreams. Among the recipients this year, La Sierra High School student Andrea Sanchez was awarded a scholarship. She will attend UCR and study business this coming Fall. The writing contest focuses on the student journey expressed in an imaginative and meaningful manner in the English language. Andrea shared her essay and received her award in front of an adoring audience this past Friday at the BEST Awards event held at the Riverside County Department of Education. Way to go Andrea!
CELEBRATE "MAGIC OF THE ARTS" SATURDAY
The final Expanded Learning Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Saturday Series event for the 2023-2024 school year was held this past Saturday. Hundreds of students spent the day with a variety of our VAPA teachers, as well as professional artists from the Segerstrom Center Arts Education Program and many of our other arts education partners. Throughout the day, our students participated in art projects, singing, dancing, instrumental music and culinary arts. Students learned from Polynesian dancers, puppet masters, and the Taiko Project, which is an acclaimed Japanese drumming group. The event was simply incredible. VAPA Saturdays are a free program provided by our Expanded Learning Program. The series will continue next school year. Look for information on the 2024-25 program on Parent Square.
NORTE VISTA HS AND WELLS MS COMPETE IN ANNUAL CIEF EVENT
Students in the Green Construction Academy at Norte Vista High School teamed up with students in the woodworking program at Wells Middle Schools to compete with over 40 Southern California schools in the annual Construction Industry Education Foundation (CIEF) event at Golden West College. It's the second year Alvord schools competed. Students had eight hours on Wednesday and four more on Thursday to build a 96-square-foot structure. Congratulations to all of our students and their teachers on another great showing!
YOUTH COURT PROGRAM CONDUCTS FINAL 2023-24 PROCEEDINGS
Working collaboratively with Partners for Innovative Communities (PIC), Alvord's restorative justice program helps offenders avoid school suspensions and potentially involvement in the juvenile justice system by participating in a simulated court with a jury composed of youth and an adult judge. The goal of this program is to instill accountability in youth without affecting their record. Another benefit is that after completing the program, many of the youth participants profess an interest in pursuing careers in the criminal justice system. This past Saturday, we held our last Youth Court proceedings of this school year. Our student volunteers play a crucial role in the Youth Court process. They serve as jurors, attorneys, advocates, and court clerks, gaining valuable insight into the legal system while actively participating in the administration of justice. An adult judge presides over all Youth Court cases.

Sign Up for our After School Program
Alvord provides an extension of the school day and school year through its Expanded Learning Program. The focus is on academic, artistic, social, emotional, and physical development for students in elementary and middle school, including middle school sports. The program does not replicate learning activities that take place during the regular school day. Instead, it builds upon them. The program is offered everyday after school, as well as intercession, including summer and extended breaks for holidays. Learn more about it here. Or call (951) 358-1682, Monday - Friday, 9:45 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.
Participate in our Middle School Sports Program
Did you know we offer a full year of middle school sports? We kick off the program with Track and Field just a few days after the school year begins. Specific information regarding clinic and team tryouts will be distributed by each individual middle school site. The link to register to participate in any our middle school sports programs will be sent via Parent Square next week once our registration website goes live. All interested students will need to register and students trying out for any of our competitive teams will need to provide a sports clearance physical form completed by a medical doctor prior to their tryout. Forms can be obtained in the main office of any of our middle schools. Soccer follows the Track & Field season. Other sports include volleyball, flag-football, basketball and pep squad. Make sure your child is registered to participate. The website link is coming soon!
Activate you Parent Square Two-Way Communication
Parent Square is a safe and secure platform for school-to-home and home-to-school communication. All of our schools rely on it to keep parents informed. Instead of a one-way communication tool, Parent Square provides two-way communication. But to fully utilize the two-way feature of Parent Square, you have to activate your account. Sign in here and activate the two-way tool.
