Come Meet Carmen!
Carmen Chanaud is a beautiful, smiling, funny 7 year old who was born 3 months prematurely. As a result, she suffered bleeding in the central area of the brain near the ventricles. The technical term for the condition is PVL or Periventricular Leukomalacia. The bleeding caused a softening of the brain tissue near where her motor skills are controlled. The damage was located more on the left part of the brain which controls the right arm and legs as well as some damage on the right hemisphere. Carmen’s physical ability to be independent is her greatest struggle. She is dependent on her family, teachers, and friends for achieving simple tasks. It is this continual struggle that she faces that exhausts her by day’s end. Yet, her overwhelming perseverance and captivating smile is what keeps us all cheering her on. Carmen does not define herself by her disability and when asked if she needs help she will always respond, “I want to try it myself.”
