Holland Intermediate Weekly Update
March 27, 2023
Principal Message
Hi Holland Families,
Thank you to all the teachers and volunteers that helped with our movie on Friday. Over 300 students attended this free event. Like many first time events, we learned a few things to tweek next time around, but we are happy our students get these opportunities.
Next week is the final week before Spring Break, so we decided to partner with the middle school and have a spirit week. You will find the themes in this newsletter.
Just a reminder that state testing begins after our break. If you are planning doctor appointments, then try to remember that the testing is in the mornings. Students returning to school after 7:45 will have to remain in the office until their class is finished testing.
Have a great week!

A message from Mr. G...
I want to believe that the warmer weather is finally beginning to show itself! This week we continue discussing our Portrait of a Graduate trait of Leadership by discussing conflict resolution in 5th grade and make of positive choices in 4th grade. Also please do not forget to let us know if you or a family member would be interested in participating in our Vehicle Career Day in May. This event is sure to make the kids day! Finally, I want to remind everyone to begin prepping students for Spring Testing by discussing healthy eating and sleeping habits as well as positive ways to handle stress such as: deep breathing, meditation, stretching, and positive self talk. --

Vehicle Career Day- May 23rd
Office Max to Sponsor Holland Intermediate!!!
Beginning April 1, when someone shops at their Holland location (6520 Centers Dr. in Spring Meadows Place) they will have an option to "round up for Holland". All of the money generated through that option will be distributed quarterly to the school for use on school supplies. This is a tremendous benefit to our staff and students and we want to thank anyone who chooses to participate.

Attendance Reporting
We are excited to announce a new platform to inform Holland Intermediate and Springfield Middle School if your child will be absent from school. The new process does not replace the traditional method of calling the attendance secretary, rather it adds an alternative tech-based strategy to let us know your child will be home for the day. Attached are directions which will guide you through the process.
This additional attendance reporting tool will roll out 3rd trimester, beginning March 7, 2023.

Important Message from Transportation Department
As many of you are likely aware, Springfield Schools, like the rest of the nation, is short staffed in the transportation department. Currently, we find ourselves with an even greater temporary shortage of drivers. Our entire transportation department, as well as staff from other departments are being called upon to drive routes. We're also combining routes and getting very creative on how we schedule personnel to avoid cancelling routes altogether as neighboring districts are having to do. Here are some things we are asking of parents to assist us in being as efficient as possible during this shortage:
- Please be advised that this can cause greater variance in pick-up and drop offs than normal, so please help us by having your student at their stop earlier (an additional 5-10 min) than usual.
- Also, if a stop is missed, please call the building to report this in order to receive a faster response time.
- Additionally, following up that call with an email to scottbrooker@springfield-schools.org AND heatherhawk@springfield-schools.org will help us to investigate the problem and get it resolved for the future with much more efficiency.
- Finally, if you know anyone who has or wants to get their CDL and bus driver endorsement, we are happy to meet with them and help get them started. Link to get started
We sincerely appreciate your assistance and understanding of this situation.
Important Message from Officer Warner
My name is Brett Warner and I am the Director of Safety Services for Springfield Local Schools. Beginning immediately, any parent that is parking in the lot behind the football field must walk their child over to Holland. The same is true for picking up your student at the end of the day. You must walk over to Holland to pick up your child. I will be enforcing this beginning Monday. If you would like to drop off your child, then I would encourage you to do so in the car drop-off loop that goes through the Holland parking lot. Additionally, students should never be dropped off in the street or at the stop sign. This creates major safety concerns and it effects the arrival and dismissal process for the district. Thank you for your understanding.
Brett Warner
Director of Safety Services
Important Information about School
Springfield Local Schools will embark on a new journey to improve foundational reading and increase reading outcomes for all students. In an effort to improve reading achievement and growth, we are providing professional development for the following educators during the week of May 15th-19th:
General Educators in grades 2-3
Intervention Specialists in grades K-3
Intervention Specialists (Special Education Classrooms) in grades K-5
From May 15th-19th several of our educators in Springfield Local Schools will participate in Phonics First training through Brainspring Academy. Therefore, classes will be CANCELED for ALL students in grades 2-3 (general education settings) and K-5 (special education classrooms) during the week of May 15th-19th. Special education classrooms will notify families.
The teachers will participate in thirty hours of multisensory, Orton Gillingham professional development over the course of five full days. The training will provide teachers with instructional strategies and materials to support whole-group and small-group classroom instruction aligned with the Science of Reading. Additionally, the training will fulfill the Ohio Department of Education's Dyslexia Mandate.
Overdue Library Books
Teacher will be sending home slips for overdue library books. Currently there are about 250 books on the overdue list, which is a lot for the size of the library. Unfortunately, if students do not return the overdue books, the next step is parent phone calls/emails/letters.
Parents, please encourage your students to return these items. Thank you for your help.
Breakfast and Lunch Fees
Springfield Local Schools meal charges are as follows:
Elementary/Intermediate schools:
Breakfast Charge $1.50
Lunch Charge $3.25
Reduced Price Students
Breakfast Charge $0.00
Lunch Charge $0.40
If you need to put money on your student's account then go to www.springfieldschools.revtrak.net

Menus are posted - click anywhere on the Nutrislice icon to select a school... remember, too, that you can download the free Nutrislice app to have Springfield Local choices at your fingertips.
GAMES!
Goals

Motivation

Success
We currently have 3 teams in 4th grade and four teams in 5th grade. Each team will have their own video game theme, and we hope it will provide some fun and healthy competition throughout the school year.
Arrival and Dismissal
As expected, the carloop and bus loop has gotten quicker by the day. Please DO NOT drop your student off on Madison St. in front of the school. This is a major safety concern for the students. We continue to monitor ways to improve the process. Parents are permitted to turn left out of the carloop. Parents do have the option of parking in the endzone lot and walking over to get their child. If you plan to do this, then please let your child know. Thank you for your cooperation.

Parent Handbook
If you haven't become familiar with the parent handbook, then here is a link to review. I want to highlight a few rules that students need to follow during the school day.
- Students are not to bring in toys or sports equipment for recess.
- Students are not permitted to wear hoods, hats, coats, scarves, or gloves in the school unless permitted by the Principal.
- Student cell phones need to stay in their lockers and turned off. Parents will have to pick up phones if confiscated for misuse.
- Students need to bring their own water bottles for the filling station. Cups will not be provided.
Introducing the TutorSmart Program
I want to pass along this amazing resource shared with our district. The Toledo Lucas County Library (including Holland Branch) have created a program called TutorSmart. This is a whole curriculum, with certified teachers present, etc. and it is being offered free of charge at all Library locations. Holland Branch hosts Monday-Thursday, 6:30-7:30. See the flyer below for more information on how to learn more.
