Seventh Grade Newsletter
March 8, 2015
Dear Parents,
Watch for progress reports that were mailed home last week.
English
This week we will be focused on non-fiction reading selections. Students will be practicing several different literacy skills that they will encounter on the upcoming M-Step Test.
We are also working on informational writing by explaining what life is like in Charlevoix for our new epals in Siberia!
Math
This week, students will be finishing up our Percents Unit. We will have a review on Tuesday, and the Summative Assessment is scheduled for Wednesday, March 11th. Afterwards, we will begin a probability unit to finish out the week.
Also, on Friday we will have a Pi contest. Saturday, is March 14th (3/14), also known as pi day because pi, a ratio of the relationship between the circumference and the diameter of a circle, is approximately 3.14. The student who can memorize the most digits for pi will win a prize! Last year, we had a student who memorized the first 68 digits of pi!
Advanced Math
This week, students will continue to work with understanding how to solve systems of equations. Last Friday, we learned how to solve systems of equations by elimination. We will continue to practice this on Monday during class. Then, we will learn how to determine which strategy to solve the system of equations (graphing, substitution, or elimination). There will be one Formative Assessment on Wednesday to check if students can solve systems of equations by elimination. Later in the week, we will learn to write systems to model situations. The Summative Assessment for this unit is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18th.

4 students will be traveling to Bellaire on Wednesday, Mar. 11, to represent our band in the District II Honor Band! They will rehearse all day and play a concert in the evening at 7:00 P.M. The concert will be open to the public and Mr. Stutzman will be available to bring students back if parents are not able to attend! Our students will be transported by Mr. Stutzman and they should wear Rayder Gear during the day and dress in their concert uniform at night! We will be hosting the 2nd annual Charlevoix County wide middle school massed band on Wednesday, March 18, 2015. Bands will attend from East Jordan, Ellsworth, Boyne City, and Charlevoix! There will be over 150 middle school students on stage and they will be working with Dr. Tim Topolewski who will direct the groups! Each band will play one or two numbers and Dr. Tim will clinic them …. the individual performances will be followed by the bands meeting in mass and rehearsing numbers that have been pre arranged by the directors!
Jr. High Solo & Ensemble will be held on Saturday April 11, 2015 …. students are rehearsing their music and will be ready to perform in Boyne City on the Saturday following our return from Spring Break!
Our spring concert will be held on Monday, May 18, 2015 at 7:00 P.M. We would like to organize a band parent group that would form prior to this concert and begin making plans to welcome the new band director that will be hired prior to the end of the school year. I am planning to work with the new director and help mentor them into their position and be available to work side by side during the fall of next year!
