Chia seeds originate from Central America, that means they are used to warmer climates, and probably grow in deserts.
Materials
- 3 dixie cups
- 75 milliliters of soil
- 75 milliliters of sand
- Water
- Labels
Variables
Dependent Variable: The Chia seed's height in centimeters
Independent Variable: The amount of sand vs. soil
Control: The type of pot/cup, type of soil, type of sand, amount of water, sunlight
Extraneous Variables: The weather
PROCEDURE
- Gather your materials
- In a cup, add fifty milliliters soil and five chia seeds
- In another cup, add twenty five milliliters sand, twenty five milliliters soil, and five chia seeds
- In your remaining cup, add fifty milliliters sand and five chia seeds
*MAKE SURE YOUR CUPS ARE LABELED - Water everyday with 20 milliliters of water
Pot #1: There was no visible growth in the all soil cup.
Pot #2: There was no visible growth in the 1/2 soil, 1/2 sand cup.
Pot #3: On day 5, we measured 2 centimeters of growth in the all sand cup, on day 6 we recorded 3 centimeters of growth, and finally on day 7 we measured 3.5 centimeters of growth.
Conclusion
Well, we may have drowned our chia seeds, but we learned that chia seeds can grow in more than just soil. In addition, we learned that there is a thing as too much water.
