Principal's Message
Sabre Families,
On May 27, the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation announced it located the remains of 215 children who were students at the Kamloops Residential School. Our hearts are with the families of each child whose death at the school went unacknowledged. To reiterate from the messaging from Elk Island Public Schools, the loss of these young lives is a tragedy beyond words.
To honour the 215 children, and every child whose life was taken, we are organizing a brief ceremony, including a moment of silence and encouraging staff and students to wear orange on Wednesday, June 2. As well, SAL will fly flags at half-mast for 215 hours—an hour for each child—from May 31 to June 8.
As we close our final day of May on Monday and welcome June on Tuesday, we understand this final month will be filled with emotion.
It doesn’t seem too long ago in August that we were talking about masking, sanitizing procedures, the new quarter system and how we were going to navigate this pandemic. Well, here we are, our last month of this historic 2020-21 school year.
As we know and understand, this school year has been unlike any other and we would like to again, extend our gratitude to our parents and students for being such team players and working through the challenges together. This summer will provide a chance to decompress, reflect, and look forward to what the fall may bring.
This final month of June is a time to focus on student achievement, wrap up final credits, submit outstanding assignments, and focus on final assessments.
Also, and to highlight our month of June, we are super excited to honor our class of 2021 with graduation ceremonies June 23 to 25, 2021! This group of graduates will always hold a special place in our heart for the adversity they have faced and all that they have overcome.
We will be hosting a final parent grad meeting next Tuesday, June 8 at 6:00 p.m. to go over specifics and provide another opportunity should our grade 12 parents have questions. Not to worry, while other schools in the community may have cancelled grad, we are moving full steam ahead with parents and significant others being able to attend and participate in this auspicious occasion.
Have an excellent week everyone,
Sunny Sandhu
