Principal's Message
December truly lived up to the Spirit of Giving. Our Patriots gave the gift of song, sharing, and time throughout the month of December. Our many December events were a great success. Santa and Me was so much fun. Our winter concert was absolutely fabulous. Thank you to all who came out. It is so nice spending time together with all our Petway families.
We are super excited with the number of Petway Patriots who earned membership in our PREPP Club for the first marking period. We are looking forward to all our special PREPP Club activities in the coming weeks.
January brings the New Year and a renewed sense of fulfillment. Focus on positive resolutions. Always completing homework, trying harder in school, being kind even when it is hard or eating healthier are all important steps to having a great year. I wish everyone the perseverance and commitment needed to stick with your resolutions.
As the cold weather approaches, please remember to bundle your child up. We want to be sure all our Patriots stay warm and healthy.
This January grades three through five will be participating in Career Day on January 16. Community speakers will be visiting Petway to talk to students about their careers. This is a great opportunity to speak with your children about how important it is to do well in school so they can reach their goals for the future..
As the month comes to a close so does our second marking period. Students still have plenty of time in January to try their hardest and work toward good grades for the second marking period. If you have concerns about your child’s progress, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher. We are here for you.
My warmest wishes are offered to you and your family for the new year.

FIRST GRADE
We are starting a new reading theme this month. We will be reading stories about nature and our environment. Please continue to have your child read to you. In Math, we will be starting Chapter 6 where the children will be learning about skip counting, numbers 0-120, and tens and ones. Please continue to review math facts at home. In Science, we will be learning about the sun, day and night, and the moon. Thank you to all the parents who donated to our Winter Party. It was a big success, and the children were excited to celebrate together. Please continue to remind your child to follow the Pathway to Patriot Pride.
STUDENTS OF THE MONTH
SECOND GRADE
Second Graders have been busy this month. In reading, they are continuing to study non-fiction text features and build their comprehension strategies in whole and small group. It is very important that they all continue to read daily over winter break. In writing, they have become very opinionated writers! They have written numerous opinion narratives in which they must state their opinion and then give several reasons. We love how they are really developing their ideas as the year progresses. In math, we have begun double digit addition. We are using many different strategies so students can choose which works best for them. Please continue to practice math facts at home.
Second Graders were full of excitement this month with anticipation of winter break. We hope everyone has a peaceful and restful break. We look forward to seeing how our Patriots grow in the new year!!!
THIRD GRADE
Third Graders are working on mastering their multiplication facts. They have learned several strategies to solve both multiplication and division facts. They have learned that division and multiplication are inverse operations; this often helps with quickly solving division problems.
In Science we have been studying ecosystems, animal groups, and how human activities alter ecosystems. Students can share videos from their Science classrooms with their parents so that they may see what we have been studying.
With the new year, we will be studying persuasive writing. When your child gives you an opinion about something, make them give you clear, concise reasons for that opinion. This will help prepare them for this unit in writing.
Happy New Year!
FOURTH GRADE
There has been so much going on in Fourth Grade!! In Writing, we have been expressing our opinions about pie, pollution, dogs, and plastic water bottles! We have been hard at work practicing our multiples and factors in Math to help us with our long division. In Reading, we have read several interesting stories such as Invasion from Mars which is a short take on the hit movie and book, War of the Worlds. Also, Coming Distractions which was a student favorite. In this story, students learned about “movie magic” and what it takes to make a story come to life. We used inferencing to help us understand movies when it comes to the music, lighting, and understanding that the movie can’t tell us everything, so we have to fill in the blanks. We also read Me and Uncle Romie and worked with idioms like “It’s raining cats and dogs”. Students had fun creating slideshows showing the literal version of several idioms as well as the actual meaning. We started our new Science curriculum and have been learning all about energy. The labs and experiments have been quite a hit! With all that learning, we had to take a break to enjoy the holiday season, where we learned about the many different holidays that are celebrated in the month of December. It was a great end the year 2018. Now we are looking forward to 2019 and all of the great things we will accomplish as we work our way through Fourth Grade!

FIFTH GRADE
The fifth grade team would like to welcome everyone back from their wonderful winter break. This month, having finished the novel, WONDER, students will be starting their next novel, My Brother Sam is Dead. This book realistically depicts what happened in the American Revolution. Complimenting their unit of study in Reading, they will be delving into the Revolutionary War time period. In Language Arts, we will be finishing up with Literary Analysis and moving into research writing, including Research Simulation Tasks in preparation for the NJSLA, (New Jersey Student Learning Assessment). This is the new state test replacing PARCC that students will be taking in the spring. In Science, students just concluded their Physical Science unit and will be moving into the Life Science unit, as Math has students adding and subtracting fractions. Fifth grade wishes everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2019. Happy New Year!!!!

Santa and Me
Santa & Me, hosted by the Petway Players, was a huge hit at Petway Elementary School. The event was held on Tuesday, December 11th with over 500 participants. Santa Claus, Mrs. Claus, and the Grinch were available for photos. The evening was rounded out by vendors, face painting, story time, games, crafts, a photo booth, letters to Santa, and holiday caroling by the Petway Prodigies.
