College Entrance Exams: Seniors who plan to attend college should take a college entrance exam ASAP. Many seniors took the ACT or SAT as juniors. Some seniors are retaking the exams in hopes of raising their scores or are taking one for the first time. General rule of thumb: the sooner, the better! Mrs. Pulley will meet with any senior who needs help registering. Mrs. Fowler also helps students on Wednesday mornings in the media center.
Are you submitting college applications? Pay attention to college application deadlines. All colleges and universities have their own deadlines, and some have priority deadlines for maximum scholarship consideration. If you need assistance filling out an application, please let Mrs. Pulley know. You can find your college’s deadlines by visiting the admissions page of its website.
College-Bound Seniors: Part of the college admittance process involves your finances. Many students and their families ask, “How can we pay for college?” The first step in answering this question is to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Results from the FAFSA show families what kind of financial assistance they can receive from the state and federal government. Financial assistance may come in the form of grants, loans, and work study. Colleges also look at students’ FAFSA results to help determine the types of awards they will give students. The FAFSA application period is from October 1, 2016 through March 10, 2017. Families should go to www.fafsa.gov to start an application.
Tax information is needed to fill out the FAFSA. In the past, families used the previous year’s tax information to complete the FAFSA. Families must now look at tax information from two years prior. For this year’s seniors, they will use tax and income data from 2015.
Southridge High School is hosting its annual financial aid night on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 at 6:30pm. An expert on financial aid will present more detailed information on the financial aid process. A representative from the Dubois County Community Foundation will also talk about their scholarships. Mark your calendars!
Going straight to work after graduation? Check out the Monthly Manufacturing Spotlight to learn about employment opportunities with local companies. Guidance also posts some job openings. See Mrs. Pulley if you need help completing a job application.
College Go! Week
Each year Indiana celebrates “College Go Week.” This year it was the week of September 26-30. To celebrate that week, the SHS homeroom teachers were asked to talk to their students on Monday about the importance of high school preparation for college and what they, the teachers, did to prepare for their college experience. Tuesday was wear your favorite college hat day, Wednesday was wear your favorite sweatshirt day, and Thursday was dress for success day.

We also gathered for a "See You at the Pole" event on Wednesday, September 28, which is a national day of prayer event where students gather at flagpoles across the globe on this day. Finally, "FCA Strong" t-shirts purchased by the majority of members to wear throughout the school year as a reminder that they are part of something bigger than themselves.
