Ways you can register to Vote
- By mail: You must complete and sign the Voter Registration Application and then send it to your county Board of Elections office
- In person: You may go to the nearest DMV and vote only if you also carry out DMV business (renewing a driver's license, etc). You may also go to a Social Services office, public health office, disability services agency, the Department of Mental Health Services, or the Employment Security Commission (ESC).
- By e-mail or fax: Email the Voter Registration Application to the county Board of Elections office. You must submit your original signature in person or by mail within 20 days of the registration deadline.
North Carolina registration deadlines
The deadline in North Carolina for the upcoming election is 25 days before. As long as the application is received or postmarked by that deadline, you will be able to vote.
Military and Overseas Registration
For military and overseas residents, you must be stationed outside of NC in the military or are overseas during an election. You can vote and register by using the Federal Postcard Application (FPCA) or The Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot. The FPCA is the preferred choice for many. Using this method means you will have to return it to the State Board of Elections by 5 p.m. the day before election day. The application can be sent by mail, e-mail, or fax.
Out-of-State Residents
If North Carolina is your permanent residence but you are out of state, you still may register to vote in North Carolina. This can be done through mail, e-mail, or fax from out of state.
