Weekly Happenings at Southeastern Elementary
Principal's Postings
Welcome to the February 4th, 2022, edition of Southeastern Scene.
Dear Southeastern families:
Mr. Roberts, Mrs. Monkul, Mrs. Smith and I spent time this week reflecting on the intentional dialogue that we use with children and how impactful this is in their growth and development. Building strong friendships, learning how to play and actively contributing to a community of learners need lots of coaching, listening and problem solving by the adults in their lives. With each experience, our children begin building their very own toolbox of strategies for resolving conflict and actively building strong relationships with friends. Learning how to handle conflict appropriately is a lifelong skill that will serve a child for many years to come.
As adults, many times it is hard not to swoop in and try to fix it for them. It is important that our children have the chance to learn from their mistakes and restore the relationships that they have with others. We want to take a moment to share the restorative dialogue that we like to use at Southeastern Elementary. This is helpful in creating a respectful classroom, building relationships and managing conflicts. When a conflict does arise, it is important for us to ensure that a child's voice is heard. Depending on each unique situation, questions that we use to encourage an open conversation may include the following:
- What happened?
- How does what happened fit with how we do things at our school? In our classroom?
- What were you thinking at that time?
- What are you thinking now about what happened?
- Who's been affected by what happened?
- What do you think you might need to do to make things right?
- What did you think when you realized what had happened?
- What effect has this incident had on you and others?
- What has been the hardest thing for you?
- What do you think needs to happen to make things right?
If your child happens to run into any type of conflict at home with siblings, friends, or neighbors, we invite you to use the same type of dialogue. Thank you for working alongside us as we build a healthy and joyful learning community.
Yours in education,
Mrs. Chastain, Mrs. Monkul and Mr. Roberts

Classroom Learning
Mrs. Erickson's Class
Kindergarten students learned about the Chinese New Year from their classmate, Claire, and her parents. The character the students made means "stay safe," which is a traditional New Year greeting. This year's celebration lasts from Feb. 1 through 15, and is a time to celebrate good wishes for the coming year.

Lost and Found
Arriving to School Late
Morning car rider line ends at 7:45 a.m. If you are dropping your student(s) off at school after morning car rider, and there are no adult staff members present outside, you MUST park your car, walk your student into the building, and sign him/her in at the table inside door #1. It is a safety concern to let students out curbside without adult supervision, and we want to be certain that all students are safe while entering/exiting the building. Also, students dropped off late will be marked “tardy" in Skyward. A student is considered tardy when arriving after 7:45.
