PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Hello Franklin Families,
This is the time of year where we may be feeling a bit of pressure as we look ahead and think of everything we have to do before the end of the school year. Students are beginning final projects in classes, preparing for AP exams that are around the corner, and training and rehearsing for state competitions. Although it may seem overwhelming, take time to slow down, take a deep breath, enjoy the present and reach out to your teachers, counselors, and administrators for help. We are all here to support you. We can sit down with you to make a plan for getting support and identifying strategies for finishing the school year strong.
Last Friday we hosted the FHS Poetry Slam. Congratulations to all of the participants in this year's Slam and a special shout out to our wonderful teacher librarian Ms. Ayn Frazee for all the work she does to provide us with a beautiful and engaging library.
Tonight, I am looking forward to attending Arts Alive which will showcase our amazing and talented performing arts students. I hope you are able to attend one of the four performances coming up this month.
As always, reach out with any questions or concerns.
Go Lightning!

SCHOOL NEWS
Arts Alive Opens TONIGHT!
Arts Alive is a collaborative annual showcase, featuring performances from Franklin's dance, choir, band, and theater departments. Performances are Friday, April 19th/Saturday, April 20th/Friday, April 26th/Saturday, April 27th, at 7:00pm. Get your tickets now, before they sell out!
Additionally, each of these nights from 5:30-7:00pm, Franklin's visual artists will be hosting an open gallery in the Black Box Theater (same location as Arts Alive). There will be art to view and art for sale, and there is no charge to enter.
NEW: PTSA Spring Appeal
As the PTSA is preparing their budget for next school year, they are asking for help raising money for grants and other supports. The first $1000 raised will be matched dollar for dollar by Tracy Wiens, Principal Broker at Old PDX Homes @ John L. Scott!
NEW: Poetry Slam Results
We are thrilled to announce the winners of the recent Franklin Library Poetry Slam! Congratulations to senior Iris Gray who placed first, followed closely by senior Ava Anderson in second place. 9th grader Siddhartha Woodard came in third. Sixteen super talented Franklin poets shared their work, and everyone did an amazing job.
Iris and Ava will have the honor of showcasing their poetry on stage at Verslandia for the chance to win $1000 on April 25th, with Siddhartha serving as the alternate.
If you missed the excitement of the Poetry Slam, you can catch all the incredible performances by following this link to the event video: Poetry Slam Video
We extend a huge thank you to our judges, the talented house band, and all the dedicated student and staff volunteers who made this event possible. Food was provided by Franklin Culinary. Special thanks also go to our PTSA for sponsoring the Poetry Slam and contributing to its success. It was truly a memorable and inspiring gathering with an amazing turnout!
NEW: Educator Spotlight
Today would be the perfect day to nominate a Franklin staff member who has made an impact on you or your student! The PTSA will recognize two educators (a term which includes anyone who works at FHS) at their May 9th general meeting. Nominations can be made here, and you are welcome to nominate as many people as you wish!
NEW: Important Change to SUN Funding
Due to a change in funding from the county, SUN community schools will no longer have a Family Resource Navigator to help families access resources as they have for the past three years. Please see the letter below for more information about this change, and how SUN will continue to serve families. If you would like to help SUN with the vitally important work they do in our community, you can make a donation here. Thank you!
FREE Prevention Rocks Conference
All families are invited to the Prevention Rocks Conference on Saturday, April 20th from 10:00am-3:00pm at McDaniel High School. The event is focused on preventing youth substance use and is going to include workshops for youth and parents, a resource fair, raffle prizes, a llama photo booth, lunch and skateboarding with the PUSH Movement (recovery community through skateboarding) at Glenhaven Park. ALL FREE!!!
Spring Campus Clean-Up
The Franklin Spring Clean-Up is happening on Sunday, April 21st, from 10:00am-noon.
Please come help spread mulch and spruce up our beautiful campus for spring. This is a great way to contribute to your community and log those volunteer hours! Bring gloves, shovels, pruners, and wheelbarrows if you have them - we will also have some to share. Come for an hour or stay longer - students, families, and community members are encouraged to attend. We'll meet at the stadium parking lot (west side of campus). Questions, contact Hannah Kramer.
Sign up here or just show up, rain or shine!

PTSA NEWS
NEW: Franks-A-Lot Restaurant Partnership
Be sure to swing by Franks-A-Lot at 2845 E Burnside on April 26th, May 17th or June 3rd (better yet, go all three days!), when they are kindly hosting a fundraiser for us. The Franklin High School PTSA will earn up to $100 per day. You can enjoy a hot dog, fries, or handmade milkshake, and they do have vegan & gluten-free options available. You will be supporting this long-standing local restaurant and your FHS PTSA at the same time.
NEW: Q&A Regarding Teachers Levy Renewal
Do you have questions about the Teachers Levy Renewal? Please Portland Council PTA for a Zoom Q&A session with campaign members from the PPS Teachers Tax Levy this Monday, April 22nd at 7:00pm.
The Teachers Levy currently funds over 655 teaching positions a year across the entire district or about 20% of all teaching positions in PPS. Measure 26-246 would protect these positions for another 5 years without raising taxes.

NEW: PTSA General Meeting
The PTSA's last general meeting of the year will be on Thursday, May 9th at 6:30pm, in the Library and also on Zoom (Meeting ID 825 6870 1693). You can email questions to presfhsptsa@gmail.com or ask them in person on May 9th.
NEW: Snack Closet Volunteers Needed
Hunger blocks school success for many of our Franklin students. Our caring staff often use their own funds to keep snacks available for the constant flow of students asking for their help. Jane Elliott, part of our Climate & Equity Team, and the PTSA are starting a project to organize a snack closet to fulfill this need. We are looking for one or two people to work with Jane on developing the format and organizing volunteers for acquiring the snacks. To volunteer or get more information, you can contact Joy Poole.
NEW: Bottledrop Fundraiser
Turn your Bottledrop dollars into Franklin High School PTSA grant dollars, staff appreciation, affinity club support, library support, and so much more. There are two ways to participate (both of which are completely FREE to you!): you can pick up a PTSA blue bag from the main office or donate your accumulated funds online.
In-Person Plant Sale & Pre-Order Pick-Ups
For those of you who missed the PTSA plant pre-sale, mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 8th from 11:00am-6:00pm. We will be in front of Franklin with a small selection of plants and hanging baskets for your Mother's Day and gardening needs.
If you would like to help with one of our largest fundraisers of the year, please consider signing up to volunteer during the plant sale pick-up and sale.
