Summer Reading Information
"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies . . . The man who never reads lives only one.” -- George R.R. Martin, American Novelist
Students entering grades 6-12 are REQUIRED to complete their grade-specific summer reading assignment. Each student was given a hard copy text at the end of the school year to support completion. Many of the texts can also be accessed through the Mackin Library. For information on how to access the Mackin Library, visit the district website --> (https://www.casdschools.org/Page/7576).
New students that enroll before 8/1 are required to complete the assignment.

Lexia PowerUp
This year, your child had access to Lexia® PowerUp Literacy®, a computer-based program that tailors instruction to their specific needs. The activities in PowerUp support and build on our English language arts classroom curriculum, focusing on three areas essential to becoming a proficient reader: word study, grammar, and comprehension.
Here’s how PowerUp works:
• Your reader begins PowerUp at a starting point that fits their specific needs and works in online activities throughout the week.
• Online activities include direct instruction and feedback as your reader learns new skills.
• Progress and performance in the program is reported so teachers can provide help when needed. You can provide support at home by asking your child what they worked on.
Students can access Lexia PowerUp over the summer. This is not required but is encouraged for students that have not completed the program.

Nurse's Corner
Dear Families of a 2023-2024 Sixth Grade Student.
My name is Ann Keenan, I am the school nurse at Scott’s 6th Grade Center. As your child’s school nurse, I am responsible for the health needs of your child during the school day. Please let me know if there are any health concerns or accommodations needed for your student to access their education. Good communication is the best way to provide a safe and healthy school environment.
The Pennsylvania Health Department requires all 6th grade students to have a physical examination for school attendance. The physical should include a health history, immunizations, scoliosis screening, as well as the annual growth and vision screenings.
Please visit your family doctor to complete your student’ physical, update immunizations and renew medication requests, if needed. All physicals should be submitted by the end of winter break. Any medication required in school must have proper paperwork completed and delivered to school by an adult. Students are not allowed to carry any medication without approval.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Take care.
Ann Keenan RN
