Mount Laurel Celebrates Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month
The Autism Society is sponsoring the sixth year of Autism Acceptance Month. According to the Autism Society, "Autism is the fastest-growing developmental disability in the United States with increasing prevalence rates continuing to create the urgent need for equitable supports and services. 1 in 36 children are diagnosed with Autism, which can be attributed to a variety of factors, primarily improved diagnostic screening and identification, as well as an increased prevalence rate itself."
Our schools value diversity and take pride in encouraging a sense of acceptance and belongness for all learners. April 1st marked the first day of Autism Acceptance Month. You will find examples of the ways your school is honoring and promoting a community of belonging for your child throughout the month. We will be highlighting activities taking place in our schools this month and sharing them with you in the newsletter.

The 4th graders at Fleetwood Elementary School are reading 'Number the Stars', a historical fiction book by American author, Lois Lowry. Mr. Goldstein, Reading Specialist, arranged for guest readers from the Esther Raab Holocaust Museum & Education Center to come to the school to speak with the students.
These guest readers are children of Holocaust survivors. They shared family stories as well as read books related to the themes of anti-bullying, determination, and acts of kindness.

THE DISTRICT CELEBRATES
THE TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE SUN
On April 8, 2024, there was a spectacular total eclipse of the sun, visible on a narrow path that stretched from western Mexico through Texas, and then northeastward toward New York, New England and eastern Canada. In such a total eclipse, the Moon exactly covered the sun, and our star’s faint atmosphere (the corona) became visible.
Our school community enjoyed this rare experience together! Teachers presented special lessons and activities in advance of the event to prepare students for optimal viewing and maximum learning. Safety is always our first concern. To that end, the district provided special eclipse viewing glasses to protect students and staff from potentially harmful rays.
There will not be another total eclipse of the sun in the continental United States until 2045.
4th graders in Mrs. Siwiec's class (Fleetwood Elementary School) calculated their age when the next solar eclipse is scheduled.
Mrs. Kinn, Interim Principal, joins Fleetwood students to view the eclipse!
Hillside students gathered outside their school to find the best vantage point on solar eclipse day!
Dr. Rafferty, Superintendent of Schools and Mrs. Thomas, Director of Human Resources, joined students in their awesome view of the eclipse in spite of the heavy cloud cover.

JOB POSTINGS
April is Stress Awareness Month—a timely reminder to prioritize mental health and well-being. In the midst of academic demands and daily responsibilities, it's crucial for both students and staff to take moments throughout the day to reset and practice mindfulness.
Remember to take some breaks. Step outside, take a few deep breaths, or engage in a quick mindfulness exercise. Your well-being is paramount, and these small breaks can make a significant difference in managing stress. Allow these moments to rejuvenate your mind, so you can have a focused and productive study session.
If your student needs additional help to reach their full potential, Care Solace can help connect them to mental health care. They will navigate the mental health care system, explain options, and quickly find available providers in our local community. Care Solace is a complementary and confidential care coordination service provided by Mount Laurel Township School District.

This April, as we join hands with communities nationwide during Sexual Assault Awareness Month, acknowledging that countless individuals carry the weight of this experience.
Speaking out about sexual assault can be incredibly difficult, but it's important to know you are not alone. Breaking the silence is a powerful act of bravery, and healing starts with understanding, compassion, and open dialogue.
No one should face this alone. This month serves as an opportunity to challenge the stigma surrounding sexual assault and emphasize the importance of support. If you or someone you know has been affected, please know that Care Solace is here for you.
If you or someone you know has suffered from sexual assault, help is available at the National Sexual Assault Hotline, and by calling 1-800-656-HOPE
