ONLINE HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
AVID ~ Learning coaches can try a reading strategy with their scholars called GIST. GIST is a comprehension strategy that is used during reading and after reading. It’s an approach to summarizing the text. When using GIST, scholars create summaries that are 20 words or less for increasingly large amounts of text. Scholars can follow the steps below to write a 20-word summary that is precise:
Use chunking to organize and read the first paragraph or section of the text.
Next, write a 20-word summary that describes the main idea of that section.
Then, read the second paragraph or section of the assigned reading.
Write a 20-word summary that combines the material in the first GIST statement and the second paragraph.
Continue this procedure until a 20-word summary is created for the entire reading.
MRS. SMITH’S TIP OF THE WEEK ~ At this point in the semester, scholars should be at least 60% through each course. If scholars are behind, please reach out to your teacher ASAP to create a catch up plan to finish the course successfully.
