Our Lady of the Cape Primary School
Newsletter - 15th March 2024
PRAYER
As we journey with Jesus towards Holy Week, let us remember all those in our world today who carry heavy crosses of poverty, homelessness, and hunger.
My loving Lord,
it's so hard to love the world sometimes
and to love it the way Jesus did seems impossible.
Help me to be inspired by his love and
guided by his example.
Most of all, I want to accept that I can't do it alone,
and that trying is an arrogance of self-centeredness.
I need you, dear God, to give me support in this journey.
Show me how to unlock my heart
so that I am less selfish.
Let me be less fearful of the pain and darkness
that will be transformed by you into Easter joy.
Amen

P&F Meeting Week 7
This week I was grateful to be able to join the P&F meeting with our new P&F executive and class reps.
Wow, what an organised and motivated team! It was so impressive to see the thoughtfulness, planning and dedication that has been put into place for our school and our students. Great thanks to our P&F President Jess Duffy, for leading the team so wonderfully at their first meeting. We are looking forward to a great partnership in 2024 as well as some terrific fund and friend raising events throughout the year.
Please visit the P&F section of the newsletter and Facebook page for upcoming details and please offer your support when and where you can.
First Eucharist
Our thoughts and well wishes this week go to our Year 4 students making their First Eucharist this Sunday. Thank you to our Year 4 teachers and team, Penny King, Annie Lord and Megan Zanetti, as well as our Assistant Principal Amie Meyer for her support, in preparing the students so well. We are looking forward to areverent and meaningful celebration on Sunday at 8:30am at Our Lady of the Southern Cross church in Dunsborough.
Early Years Conference
Last week, the Catholic Education WA Early Years Conference was held at the Hyatt Regency in Perth.
OLC was represented by our Kindy teachers, Katie Horrocks and Monique Wendelin who participated in the conference and brought back to school some great ideas, inspiration and consolidation that we have some effective and engaging programs and spaces in our Early Childhood classes at OLC.
Our school was also asked to present at the conference the great work we have now been doing over many years with the Kimocchi and Friendology programs, both in the Early Childhood and across the school.
I felt privileged to present alongside our Pre Primary teacher and Early Childhood Coordinator, Kristie Turner as well as CEWA Wellbeing Leader Dr Deb Perich. We had some great feedback in showcasing OLC at the Conference.
NAPLAN
Our Years 3 and 5 students are now half way through their 2024 NAPLAN process. There is a considerable amount of work required to set up and prepare the students as well as to ensure they feel calm and confident to complete the set of tests. Huge thanks to the Year 3 and 5 teaching teams.
So far the students have completed the writing and reading tests. Conventions of Language and Numeracy will be held on Monday and Tuesday of next week.
NAPLAN provides us with another set of data that helps us recognise student growth and track the effectiveness of our teaching and learning programs.
OLC Promotional Film
Last week we once again teamed up with local film maker, Till Spielhoff, to create a new OLC promotional film. Once again it was an enjoyable process working with Till. Filming is now completed and is in post-production. Stay tuned via Facebook and the OLC website for our latest feature, which will be out in early Term 2.
That OLC Feeling......
It has been wonderful to recently hear such warming comments about our school by visitors and parents alike.
I have had numerous comments made to me about that "OLC feeling" when we have had visitors or relief teachers returning to the school.
We have also recently had many comments and emails from parents informing us that their child/ren have settled so well and have made a terrific start to the year.
While we are always happy to listen, act and support parents and families when problems need to be solved, it is always great to receive a compliment or two every now and then.

Bringing Toys to School
Parents, please remind your children that they may not bring toys or equipment to school, with the exception of news items. This includes Pokemon Cards from Coles.
Car Park Safety and Courtesy
Thank you for your care and consideration for the safety our students in our parking and pick up lanes. We understand the car park is very busy at school drop off, but do reiterate to please take care of both children and adults and also other cars in this area. We have recently been notified of a car which was damaged in the top car park, however, no note was left on the damaged car.
OLC Swimming Carnival
The Yr 4-6 students enjoyed a terrific day at the OLC Swimming Carnival with an amazing day of weather. As always, it is a terrific venue to participate in our Carnival at the GLC Leisure Centre. The students were all so supportive of each other and cheered on their teammates. This positive attitude is such an inspiring feeling for everyone involved. Well done to the Yr 6 leaders for being so helpful and organised.
Well done to all!

Lent and Project Compassion
During Lent we aim to help others and we are trying to add moneyto the Project Compassion boxes in each classroom. It is very special when students can give up some of their pocket money or sacrifice a treat by willingly contributing their own money to the cause. As an added incentive, we are running a colouring competition for Lent. Students can choose from one of six different colouring in sheets from their teachers. When they’ve completed their entry, bring it to their teacher and place $2 in the classroom Project Compassion box. Entries need to be in to teachers by Monday the 25th March. A winner from each class will be announced at the last assembly of the term on the Thursday.
Year 4 First Eucharist
Our Year 4 students have been busily preparing to receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist (or First Holy Communion), this Sunday morning. As part of their preparation this week, the 21 candidates participated in the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Tuesday with Fr. Archie, and in numerous practice sessions in the church and at the school. Many thanks go to Mrs. King, Mrs, Lord and Mrs Zanetti for their hard work in preparing the candidates. Special thanks also to Mrs. Sherborne, Mrs. Graham, the choir and the prayer friends who will also attend the liturgy on Sunday to support the candidates. All OLC families are welcome to participate at the 8.30am mass at the church on Naturaliste Terrace. There is an air of excitement as we journey towards this important step in their faith journey. Please keep these students in your prayers. Take a look at this short video if you would like to understand more about the First Eucharist. Please keep these students in your prayers.

Donations of Old Winter Pinafores/Skirts
Winter Pinafores / Skirts
As previously advised, the winter pinafores and skirts will no longer be required for girls. One of our resourceful parents, Kelly Sweet has found a wonderful organisation, Uniform Rescue, which collects and donates uniforms from schools around WA to schools and communities overseas who can give the uniforms a second life. A collection box will be provided outside the office, please place your clean items there..
