Carus School News
Hello Carus community,
This week it feels like the fall season is really underway. If you haven't already, please be sure to sign up for your virtual fall conference on October 13 or 14. Our goal is to have all iPads out to students before these take place so that families can use their student's iPad to attend the Zoom conference. Families of sixth grade students, please note that, because students have lessons with Ms. Eilert, Ms. Kent, and Mr. Salisbury, you can sign up for a 10-minute conference with each of them.
With the rainy weather this week, we also want to be sure you know that, while students are continuing to eat outside, we have tents and canopies covering the lunch area, and the district has ordered portable heating units in anticipation of lower temperatures as we head further into the fall and winter. You also likely saw that we have indoor seating available for a spaced out indoor eating option.
Enjoy the rest of your week,
Sam Thompson
Jogathon: Run for the Arts
Last week your student should have brought home their Jogathon collection envelope. As in prior years, our goal is to raise funds that will pay for an Artist in Residence program for students to participate in the spring. If, due to COVID-19 protocols, we're unable to run an Artist in Residence program this school year, we'll work with students, staff, parents, and community members to identify another student-centered project that we can put the funds toward instead. Yesterday we announced that if we reach our goal of $20,000, students will be able to put a pie in the face of three staff members!
A Message from the School Counselor
I have a Genie Lamp in my office, and my 3rd grade friend Caiden asked me if there's a real Genie inside, and I said, "Well, I can tell you that last year I was working alone in my office and was feeling sad because I missed seeing all of my students. I rubbed the lamp and wished that we would return to full day in-person learning... and here we are!" Wishes do come true, and it has been SO great to be back face to face with your precious children. I look forward to reconnecting with parents and guardians this year by sharing resources and parenting tips, and providing information about what the Canby School District K-12 Comprehensive Counseling Team is up to throughout the year! I'd like to start off by telling you a little more about my role as the School Counselor at Carus:
School counselors help to support the social, emotional and academic needs of all students. We accomplish this by providing
- Classroom lessons
- Individual counseling
- Group counseling
- Crisis intervention
- Consultation with parents and teachers
- Coordination with outside agencies and therapists
- Referrals for community resources
All counseling and group sessions in a school setting are short-term in nature, and focus on solutions to help students succeed socially, emotionally and academically. School counseling activities help students gain confidence in their ability to interact with others, learn how to solve problems, manage and work through feelings, develop coping and calming skills, recognize their strengths, and much more!
Topics covered include friendship, empathy, calming strategies, problem solving, diversity, kindness, self-esteem, resilience, optimism, career interests and personal safety.
The school counseling program at Carus Elementary is aligned to the standards set forth by the American School Counselor Association's (ASCA) National Model.
