NEW HOPE FOCUSES ON KINDNESS AND CARING
We would like to thank everyone who participated in the Canned Food Drive!! We collected nearly 600 pantry items that were donated to members of our community in need of some extra food during the Winter Break. We are now leading Operation Care Package with the Student Council. We have been collecting items to send to our troops that are stationed outside of the United States. If you would like to donate items, we are collecting cookies, snacks, candy, hygiene products, etc. We are also accepting stamps and envelopes. We plan to send our packages at the end of January.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT AT NEW HOPE
This month we are focusing on kindness and caring. Ms. Kelleher and Ms. Smith are teaching classes to all grades on these important character traits. The New Hope Voyagers have been working together to fill up "The Kindness Wall" with kind and caring statements about their peers. Ms. Smith also put up a bulletin board to remind students to be kind every day. Additionally, Student Council has paired up with the counselors to help lead an Anti-Bullying campaign. Finally, we are very excited for the Terrific Kids program on January 29, 2015. We coordinate with the Kiwanis Club each month to help recognize our Terrific Kids.
STUDENT COUNCIL EFFORTS AT NEW HOPE
Ms. Kelleher, Ms. Lamason, and Ms. Smith lead the Student Council at New Hope Elementary. The Student Council is a group of 22 fifth grade students that meet and work together to make our school a better place! Throughout the year, the Student Council has been raising money with our School Store and our yard sale at the Fall Festival. We are going to be giving our earnings to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, The Ronald McDonald House, UNC Children's Hospital, and Duke Children's Hospital. Representatives from each of these programs will be coming to New Hope to do a presentation for the Student Council members.
COLLEGE AND CAREER EXPLORATION WEEK
In September, the Student Council hosted the Orange County College Fair at the Dean E. Smith Center. More than 100 representatives from colleges across the United States attended. Ms. Kelleher and Ms. Smith are preparing a college and career exploration week with nearly 60 parents and others who will be coming to New Hope to speak to our students about their professions. Ms. Smith will also be teaching a College and Career Readiness Unit in all of the 5th grade classrooms. Following all of that, we will be preparing the 5th graders for their transition to middle school. Every year, we plan a college and career exploration week to help the students understand the relationship between education and their future endeavors. On the last day of career week, every student can dress up as what they would like to be when they grow up. How exciting!!
