Welcome Back!

Letter from the Principal
Dear Tualatin Elementary Families,
I hope you all found new ways to enjoy this past summer with those who are close to you. We are excited to welcome all our new and returning students and their families to a great school year. This will certainly be a start to school unlike any other we have experienced. Our dedicated staff is committed to making sure that we establish the needed relationships to support learning while at home. We look forward to working with each of you to make this a very successful school year together. Everyone here at school has been busy learning new things about how to best connect with students through virtual classrooms. All students will have the opportunity to see and interact with their class starting this Monday, September 14th at 8:30 A.M. for morning meetings. At Tualatin Elementary we have high expectations when we are together at school, and we are committed to maintaining these high expectations while learning together virtually. Please read all the school information included with this letter for important details about the first week of school and what to expect.
At Tualatin Elementary School, even while we are not together on campus, we are here to ensure that your child feels safe, respected, valued and challenged every day. Our entire staff works hard to support each child’s social, emotional and academic development throughout each school year. It is very important to us that we still create a learning environment that helps each child reach their full potential, and become positive citizens in the school community. This includes a whole new level of digital citizenship this year for all students and staff.
For now, each school day will start at 8:30 AM and end at 2:30 PM. Regular attendance is still one of the most important areas for parents to support and follow through with. We hope that routines at home allow for students to be part of learning during these times. While learning at home online, regular attendance will also include learning that may need to take place during times after 2:30 PM and weekends. Our goal is still for every staff member and student to have at least 97% attendance. This means that all adults and students miss no more than one day of school each month. We will share important ways to help children stay healthy and safe during the year so they reach the 97% regular attendance goal each month and all year long. We know that daily attendance will look different this year while we start the year at home and online. Our goal is to partner with families to keep students connected to school and engaged in learning on a regular basis.
Please note: Go to the Canvas app on your child’s iPad to complete the following courses. Both courses should be completed by the time they close at the end of the day on Sunday September 13th. Completing these two items will help students learn how to get connected to their class through Canvas each day starting on Monday, September 14th.
2020 Welcome to iPad 1:1 learning!
Getting to know your TTSD iPad
A great way to stay connected to what is happening at Tualatin Elementary is to review school information that will come to you through a variety of ways. We have found that our families prefer to receive information directly from their child’s teacher(s). Please refer to classroom newsletters, the Black Bear Bits that comes out on Fridays, the Tigard-Tualatin School District website and the Tualatin Elementary School website, follow us on Twitter, and download the TTSD app. Enjoy the remaining few days of summer and have your child READ, READ, READ. We all look forward to virtually seeing you all soon.

Staffing Update for Elementary Schools
Important updates regarding changes to our elementary music, physical education, and STEAM programs for the 2020-21 school year.
To responsibly meet the requirements for reduced class-sizes at the elementary level, we are placing five music and five PE teachers into classroom teaching positions for this school year.
The five music and five PE teachers not placed in classrooms will support our music and PE programs and will be assigned to two schools each. Elementary schools will alternate between two weeks of music or PE. Students will have either music or PE for two consecutive weeks and then switch. Watch for more information in the coming week.
The STEAM specials class will not take place this year. STEAM teachers have been placed into classroom positions or have taken on other assignments for this school year.
The music and PE teachers who will be alternating between two schools are dedicated to keeping their students engaged with their respective subjects. They will be working with their home school as well as getting to know a whole new student body. These teachers are creative and energetic and are looking forward to connecting with students through their own Canvas accounts.
We ask for your patience as these ten specialists refine their system of working between two schools. Thank you for your continued support as we all navigate and adjust to meet the needs of all of our students during the ongoing threat of COVID-19.
