April 2015 - Kitley Elementary
PRINCIPAL'S LETTER
Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope that the Kitley family enjoyed some time together and I am thankful for the sunny days that we had. We are down to just seven short weeks of school, but they are going to be very busy with events, instruction, and assessments.
We have many things to celebrate as we continue to strive to be the best we can be. Our IREAD results came in this week. 95.8% of our third grade students passed for the first round!!! These are the best scores we have seen since Kitley Elementary opened in 2011. More information will be coming home soon regarding your child’s score. Please watch for this VERY IMPORTANT information. The parent reports will be sent home within the next two weeks.
Congratulations to Amanda Stevenson, one of Kitley's music teachers. She is Kitley Elementary’s 2015 Teacher of the Year! I personally want to thank Mandy for all of the work she does to make our music events successful. She also makes a positive impact for our staff as she always has a positive attitude and a smile on her face.
I want to thank our PTC for all of their hard work in assisting the music department with purchasing new risers for our music events. Our old risers were not big enough for our students and needed to retire. We are very excited to have our new risers ready for our 3rd grade program that will be held on Thursday, April 23rd @ 6:30pm.
The second round of ISTEP+ will begin on April 23rd. All students in grades 3-5 will take the multiple choice portion online this year. We will be testing until May 5th. ATTENDANCE is crucial!! Thank you for not scheduling any appointments during school hours during this time.
Once again, thank you to all of our VIP volunteers and parents who help us daily. We could not succeed without YOU!!!! Look ahead at our events calendar. We have many exciting events scheduled to wrap up another successful year at Kitley.
Always learning,
Mrs. Schoene

COACH'S CORNER
Everyday Mathematics at Home:
Look for geometric shapes around the house, in the supermarket, on buildings, and on street signs. Help your child use geometric names for the shapes, such as triangle, square, rhombus, hexagon, and so forth. Use household items (toothpicks and marshmallows, straws and twist-ties) to construct and name shapes. Encourage your child to try combining shapes to make other shapes.
Writing at Home:
Stopping a writing in midstream, and then starting up again another day can be difficult. Turning the creative juices on and off is hard. Here is an old writer’s trick to help your child: before putting the writing aside for the day, have him/her stop in the middle of a sentence. The next day, as your child is rereading, he/she will complete the sentence and more easily move into another.

Notice of Immunization Requirements for 6th Graders (03/15)
Parents of current 5th graders:
Students need additional immunizations when they enter 6th grade. The IN State Dept. of Health’s required shots are Tdap and MCV4 for all 6th grade students. The requirement is based on grade level, not age; students who is 10 years old and up may receive the shots.
Please contact your student’s doctor as soon as possible to schedule an appointment before school begins in July 2015. Doctor’ offices may have limited appointments if you wait to call. The exclusion date for students without the shots is September 22, 2015. Written proof of appointment must be on file for the student to continue to attend beyond Sept. 22. Please send your elementary school nurse a copy of the updated shots if your student has already received the required shots. Send the middle school nurse the records if appointments are over the summer.
If you have questions you may call Peg Stanish RN, Supervisor of Health Services, at 862-2411 or Heather Anderson RN, Jenny Kiger RN, or Sandie Hickey LPN at Kitley at 803—5977. Thank you so much.
In addition to your private providers, the Marion Co. Health Dept. has many appointment times and walk-in clinics. Call (317)221-5700 for more information. The Jane Pauley Community Health Center at Hawthorne Elementary School (8301 E. Rawles Ave.) provides immunizations at affordable prices and accepts major insurance plans. Appointments are necessary—call (317)532-3999 for more details.
